ableton "midi note gating"

I was wondering if there was a way to effectively gate a synth so that when no midi note is drawn in there will be no sound out put. I.E. IF I had synth with a reverb and delay effect on it I could hear the effects while the note was playing but as soon as the note ends the track is muted or gated so you do not have to hear the tail. Rather then going in and manually drawn volume automation or using a simple gate that doesn't engage exactly when you want.

in short.. midi note on=sound midi note off=no sound

I think you could do that with buses and sends.

Are you using ableton?, i can think of one way, so you have your synth track with the midi clips and such. Group the instrument in the synth track and create a new chain and insert an another synth and set the amp envelope to instant attack and release, and full sustain. Deactivate this new synth in the instrument rack chain list. Create a return track(s) with the effects you want. insert a gate effect on those return tracks and set the sidechain input to the recently created but deactivated chain output. If you get the settings right there will be no clicking and it should be more or less what your looking for (if there are tails on the actual synth track, just copy the gate effect to the end of that chain) It takes a bit to set up but it should be what your looking for, and you wont have to tediously browse the track creating automation.

Or if you are satisfied with the sound you can route the synth and the returns to one track resample it and then just, cut the audio where you want.

Basically I don't see a really quick way of doing it.

Turn the release all the way down. <--- That won't work when you have effects on the chain though :/ There's always the old fashioned way of drawing in the gate with volume automation...

sidechain gate your delay and verb to your synth and tweak the gate so that when note=off, the gate kicks in. im kinda suprised you haven't figured that out since you already knew about gating.

spoiler alert: it's gonna sound like the 80's!
