1000$ Budget for buying DJ equipment this Xmas.

Post by OttoMatik » Fri Dec 07, 2012 10:50 pm

Hey all, this year I've saved up a bunch and decided that I am going to buy myself some proper dj equipment.
Now I have to make a big choice:

CDJ's or Vinyl? (Don't want to use a computer, I don't like having to look at a screen to choose my songs)

I am leaning towards CDJ's mainly because CD's are cheap, and I can burn my dubs right away.
Vinyl looks really nice (although I also love the look of CDJ's) just that records seem pretty expensive and I would have to get my dubs cut wich is also extra $$$.

Help me decide :D

(Also, I don't mind buying used - chances are I'm going to have too)

My setup cost a grand new and I'm happy with it. It's all numark, two tt200, 2 ndx400, 1m6usb mixer. Obviously ppl are gonna say technics 1200 all te way and pioneer second hand cdjs. Jussayin you can have it both ways for a stack

Thought they don't make the 1200's anymore? I could be wrong.

Honestly, you'll be better off with CDj's. There more compact and you won't have to lug all that heavy ass vinyl with you if you gig somewhere. Plus vinyl sounds like shit.

That's right. I said it.

OK........

Vinyl is far inferior in terms because with digital recordings you can get a much "purer( im not sure of that's a actual word but you fuckers understand what im trying to convey)" representation of what the original sound source is supposed to sound like. Using a needle cartage on a piece of vinyl causes friction. In that friction there is distortion. Please dont make me elaborate further.

Erm, I thought that friction was turned/translated into sound? That's why when the needle hits some dust your hear pops.
For me, sound quality doesn't matter as much cause I'm sure it'll sound the same (Even though vinyl goes up to 50khz in terms of frequencies...I think)

So if I were to buy myself a pair of CDJ's, would the 800's mk2 be a good choice?
And as for vinyl - is it even possible to get technics for under 1k?

rubadub posted on fb that they were selling a couple of recently refurbished pairs

best thing to do is just keep an eye out for things like that, as well as more local websites

Ok, I'll own up to my (slightly idiotic and drunken) comment.

But, ill leave you with some food for thought.

^ as above mentions.. Time coded vinyl might be the best, can then have the best of both worlds.

Also there was a company i forget which.. i think cytronics or something and the parts used in one of the models is the exact same components on the technics 1200 , but at a fraction of a price.

Also as previously stated if you want some 1200's just keep a look out on all the social media and selling sights,,, theres a pair going for 300.... damn i wish i had 300 spare thats nothing... im guessing they will need repairing but still worth it.

@crimsonhost :: quote from your link ::: Do I think CDs actually sound better than vinyl? Yes and no. They sound different, and that's really all I am saying. Proper use of equipment can yield fantastic sounding results on any medium.

Yeah I don't really wanna use timecode vinyls, if I'm gonna buy vinyl - then I'm gonna use records.
If I'm gonna buy CDJ's, I will download songs.

You COULD hold on to those 1000 bucks until you find a good deal on a set of 1200s+mixer (lots of people sell those in bunches, second hand, could probably get those for 400 - 500) and get a second hand CDJ-1000 Mk3.

But you're a lot more enthusiastic about CDJs, so maybe just get a set of second hand MK3s. There's no right and wrong in this, regardless of what the dinosaurs are trying to tell you. It's a lot of money, man, and it's always best spent on something that your heart is into 100%, which doesn't seem to be vinyl.

...but do you already have speakers and headphones? Hi-fi speakers will do just fine, you really don't need monitors for that. But decent isolating headphones are a good idea.
