Owning a gun and using it against intruders...

Do you think it is acceptable to shoot an intruder in your house as a method of defending yourself/your family/your property, and if you found yourself faced with an intruder whilst equipped with a gun, would you shoot them?

Obv. this answer may be different for US Ninjas (where gun ownership is 'legal') as opposed to other parts of the world where it may not be (UK, for instance). Unless anyone has a shotgun license in the UK, however bear in mind cause célèbre Tony Martin.

in b4 pkay

I think aiming at them is fine but id only shoot if theyre still coming at me like some sort of pcp victim, most people only turn to crime like this at a time of desperation which isnt always their own fault. -q-

Was that farmer the one who chased the guy down the road then shot him?

no

i dont think invading a home, even mine, is a crime worthy of death. if i owned a gun (which i dont ever plan on), id just use it to threaten and intimidate at the most

I wouldn't keep a gun in the house even if it was legal so the issue would never arise

I'm pretty much anti guns.
My step dad is gun crazy.
Sleeps with a revolver under his pillow.

I can only see owning a gun going badly when used for self-defense.
But this is all my opinion.

Guns for sport I'm more open to.
Not hunting, just target shooting.

are you speaking about castle doctrine?

its not exactly clear cut...

but then again, its not about right or wrong when it comes to defending your life or the lives of those around you (eg family, friends etc)

Maybe if the courts could make their mind up about things like this people would know where they stand, time and time again you see people who genuinly acted out in self defense getting locked away but then you get people who went far too far getting away scott free.

Fuck guns.

He shot at intruders but the details were a little sketchy.

Never said anything about actually killing someone, though it's interesting to see someone make that jump without being prompted.

That's quite Freudian.

Why not?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_doctrine - if that's how you want to interpret it.

So the issue is down to legislation rather than attitude?

is it, at the end of the day, any different from using any other weapon in a self defence situation?

eitherway you can end up fucked if the person is seriously injured or even killed.

obviously its not the only problem but when youve got someone breaking into your house whos potentially dangerous, you kinda want to know how far you can go to get him out of your house

ooh, this has been done to the death but..

i'd fire a warning shot first, not just gonna shoot you straight away. if he doesn't leave, i'd shoot to maim..and of course if he's still trying to attack me all zombie like or something, or perhaps steal my precious space kitty art print, i'd shoot to kill

well when you're shooting someone, there's quite the risk of killing them while you're at it

if you're not ready to perhaps take someone's life, don't shoot them (unless youre highly trained and can ensure a nonlethal shot even under pressure or whatever)

yeah, with my luck 'shooting to maim' probably translates too 'accidental bullet to the face'
