i always look at these and think they look farkin mint wouold love to have a session and i was just wondering whether anyone makin dubstep uses one for it or whether its solely the tool of a hip hop producer???

Got one but never use it. Best thing is for it's swing, heavy piece of kit but you can do loads more with software. Hope that helps

fair enough, can you use it in conjunction with ableton as some sort of midi controller or is it a waste of time

Sounds like you might be in the market for an MPD instead of an MPC...

You can make full tracks in the MPC without a need for the computer, MPD is just a controller for your daw.

I use a mpc2000xl and its sick. i've had it for years but still love it. i start most of my tracks by messing about with drum samples in it, then record the 8 outputs into my mac and build around the loops.

good idea ... even if you just used this method as a sketch pad for a track you plan to make entirely in another software program. I think i'm going to dust off my old mpc and give this a try.

Just get a copy of GURU, the MPC swing templates (identical to the Akai shit) and a pad controller.

Me gotty. Love it. Get it working with Ableton and you've got an MPC on steroids for like a quarter the price.

Part of the MPC's appeal is its low-fi crunchy sound. Also because the workflow is completely different, music made on an MPC is always going to sound different to music made on a software sequencer.

def. a different way of working at music than using a software sequencer

they work great in conjunction-- start ideas in the mpc, finish in software.

I've played on an MPC60 (the original) it definitely had the crunchy sound. These days though, Timbaland, Kanye West etc are all using the newer MPCs and they all got anything but a crunchy sound. Clean as you want it.

Can't top it for workflow though. If only I had cash in the bank...

Yeah if you want a crunchy old-school hip hop sound you can bitcrush your kicks.


[edit} I once had the chance to get a MPC-60 for dirt cheap and completely slept on it. Kicking myself.

it's my main sequencer. been useing it for 8 years now. i use the mpc2000xl and the mpc 4000

the 4000 has some really cool filters / efx and sampling tools but befor buying you have to put functionally and practicallity in balance to be weighed as they are pretty pricey

i suggest buying a used one

No, it's just a controller, it doesn't "do" swing, the sequencer does. Think of it as a keyboard in the shape of an MPC

You can get the MPC swing pattern as a groove template for whatever DAW you're on, though. Just google it.
