Personally i'd go with the akai mpd simply because akai are the drum machine kings, but it might be an idea to try both out at a music store and see which knobs/pads you feel most comfortable with

i have the pad control. It's pretty good, but one MAJOR downfall is the midi data it produces.
Basically if you hit a pad on the pad control and the pads is set to trigger at C4, it will show up on your sequencer as C3. A whole octave below what you want. And this isn't just on one sequencer. Tried it from Cubase, to Logic, to Protools, to Renoise, Sonar, etc.. Same thing. So I know it's a driver issue. To my knowledge, they haven't fixed this yet. Other than that, it's pretty cool.

Personally I would go with the MPD, but having used both I'd say either one is a safe bet.
I used the padKontrol on a mac w/Live and I didn't have that MIDI data issue.
