WIP Namastep tracks (Ethnic odd timed dubstep)

Post by Jekks » Mon Jan 14, 2013 9:54 pm

Hey!

First post on here.

I play in a live electronic band called Jekks and The Priests of Heka, we play anything from chill, dubstep, ambient to progressive and psytrance.

In our last album we did an almost dubstep song (Per ankh, check it at jekks.bandcamp.com) and I wanted to explore it more.

Being that I come from a classical and jazz background in guitar and violin and now play sitar, oud, djembe, shamisen (a tonne of instruments) I wanted to explore dubstep and electronic music in odd time signatures to really put these instruments and my knowledge to the test, also put my production knowledge to the test, making the beats flow and not just sound like incomplete rubbish...

SO below are a few sketches I've done of three tracks for the EP entitled Namastep, it's ethnic odd times dubstep from australia... as i said, these are sketches, ideas, no live instruments have been recorded, only stuff on my midi guitar and midi drums. the track 7 step i wrote on FL studio HD for Ipad, i'm pretty happy considering the limitiations on a mobile DAW.

Anyway, feedback is more than welcome and encouraged!

I love the direction of the first one.. The ambiance is fairly peaceful. Maybe a little more bass and since you have the capabilities I would like to hear live instrument replacements.

The second one is alright considering the resources available.

The third I'm not a fan of at all really.. Pretty repetitive.. Even with the little switch ups it just feels like it is a few loops going back and forth.

cheers! yeah bass and sub-bass haven't even been played with on anything yet, like i said, sketches for songs, these are literally working ideas, make loops in session view, drag loops into arrangement, export...

but yes, i agree with the repetitiveness in 'al hakim' i'll definately be changing the melodies and bass lines around for sure.

i will keep you updated on progress, the EP is due out in the next couple of months so changes should be posted here fairly frequently in the coming weeks :)
