any good (preferably free) kick samples out there?

Post by Dystinkt » Thu Jan 17, 2013 2:15 am

My internet searching has come to no avail, and I want to try something that perhaps isn't a Vengeance pack. The goldbaby packs haven't really been what I want, I'm after some meaty kicks, something similar to techno or even trance kicks, since I find their really good kick samples to work with. anybody able to help? Yes I appreciate processing the kick is half the battle, but I don't really have a good startoff sample to work with.

loopmaster's genre essentials samplepacks usually have kick samples.

learn to process your own kicks the way you want it, eqing is powerful & can improve/change the kick a lot. i like carefully automating distortion to get a nice thump. its better doing it yourself since iv never found any kicks iv liked in sample packs.

Thanks for the help everybody, I've been trying to do that Sunny and I've achieved some decent results, but the samples I'm working with just aren't good enough to begin with for the sound I'm after

I'll try to make this a useful response, but IMHO if Gold Baby isn't good enough for you to layer and process I don't know what you think you are going to find out there. I also think Wave Alchemy has good drum hits, especially for layering. They have tons of free packs too.

A lot of times when I layer kicks I like a wooden sounding 909 (almost like a garage style kick) for the top end and one of those short, subby 808s for the bottom end. EQ them. I just squeeze them a little with a compressor and follow that with a tape emulation and squeeze it a bit more in series. If you add some saturation/distortion you can get that kind of square-ish wave sounding kick. I know that's like kick layering 101, but I feel like a lot of getting the kick right isn't the sound design, but getting it to sit right in the mix.

Could you post an example of a song with a kick you want to make?

Not saying those kicks don't sound good, but they don't seem a mystery to me. Again, I think a lot of their impact comes from how they sit in the mix, but that's just my opinion. I wouldn't call myself an expert. Try serial compression (still don't over do it) to tighten up the layers. Even for a kick like this I'd probably drop some "tape compression" from an emulation on it. It's softer and rounds out the highs nicely. And think about what you need to layer. All of those sound like they have nice punchy bit (somewhere in the upper ish mids) and a nice short, but fat bottom end.

Everything we posted is valid.
Pick a kick and use it.
As fragments has said, it's all about how they sit in the mix.
Tune them correctly, eq, etc.

Wait, what's wrong with an 808?
Like have you actually fucked with it? Not just an ADSR on the velocity, but some pitch work?
Do you say zerbaman? Or do you say zebraman?

Friction and Icicle have a nice pack out, think it's a loopmasters one. Some very nice breaks kicks in there, infact most of the sounds are quite nice.

record yourself beatboxing the kind of sound you want. then play it back and if something is missing, make that sound. I've been meaning to try this lately.

Thanks for the advice y'all, been very helpful and I've now got a wealth of new samples! It might be nice to turn this into a rolling thread, if anybody ever finds any decent sample packs to share them on this thread :)
