Who brings ear plugs to every show?
lately I've been bringing ear plugs to every show. I dont tend to wear them until the headliner comes on because usually the volume is insane for the headliner. my ears did feel a bit shot last night and this morning even with the plugs in half the time, but they feel better mnow. the new pk systems and everything like that are just insanely huge...i like the bass but personally it can get a little too loud for me, what do you guys think?
also, i was right near datsik during the show and he didnt seem to be wearing any ear protection, do big dj's usually do this? i cant imagine touring with that huge sound system every single night could be too healthy.
lastly, does anyone know if any fairly priced custom ear plugs that allow for some conversation and block all frequencies fairly evenly?

Re: Who brings ear plugs to every show?
yeah i have one in at most shows mate, the bass and dub makes it vibrate and i have to take it out after a while (or too many red stripes)

OH NO U DIDNT
Re: Who brings ear plugs to every show?
have been wearing them for 2 years, but for me it is damage control.
Custom ones are ALWAYS going to set you back a shitload of money, whilst there are plenty of cheap alternatives. Chemical even sell some I believe. I got mine from the Apotheker: 30£ or something, great gear. Has respect for frequencies and easily blocks out 10-15 decibels.

Yeah I do occasionally, Cable's system is too loud for me so I wear them there

It's not like he dislikes Vivek or something.

I do, but the last 3 nights I went to had well balanced funktion 1 set up. Clear sound, but you could still talk to each other
at reasonable level.
Kind of know I won't need them tomorrow, but I bring em anyway.

I was using disposables until i got a pair from chemical records a little while ago, only £15. I've not been to a rave without them and I normally wear them for 60-80% of the time in inside. Can't put a price on your hearing.

got some cheapo ones from pharmacy and they are nice. But i usually forget them at home.
Also, when i'm playing, i take them out for better monitoring.

Re: Who brings ear plugs to every show?
thinking about getting custom made ones. what kind of filters (-db: 6, 9, 12, 18, 25) are appropriate for club use?
Re: Who brings ear plugs to every show?
I'd go with either 9 or 12. 6 is useless. A lot of people still have the 100db mark in their mind when playing live while over here, the legal allowed is 90db. So you can count on a lot of people going 10 DB over. Having said that, your tolerance might for example only be at 85db. So I personally would go somewhere between 10 and 20 db.
Re: Who brings ear plugs to every show?
Assuming we are talking dBA, I would definitely go with more than 10dB of 'blocking'.
A lot of clubs work with a maximum of 105dBA at reasonable distance from the stage. This is quite high if you
don't take regular breaks.
If you don't care that much about losing clarity (mid-hi/hi), those foam plugs are perfect. Those are actually
the best earplugs for preventing damage. Plugs with a flatter frequency response will cost you.

I use cheap ER20's, worked rather well at system even when by the stack all night. For once my ears didn't ring.

Re: Who brings ear plugs to every show?
I wear earplugs when I'm drumming because I'm a noisy bastard... Compared to that standing next to a big soundsytem is like a jacuzzi for my ears, the only time i've ever felt like I needed earplugs in the dance was at the 2nd System

Re: Who brings ear plugs to every show?
I bring earplugs to every show, but admittedly don't always put them. On new years eve I was routing around in the inside pocket of my jacket trying to find the purse thing with them in before stashing my coat in the cloakroom, and instead pulled out a packet of condoms that I had in the same pocket right in front of my mate Lizzie.
Anyway I strongly recommend everyone using them especially on the big sound nights like system, got a bad case of tinnitus a few years back that passed (or at least I stopped noticing it) after about a year. Got a bit lax after that and wasn't always using the earplugs and it's now returned within the past month or so with a vengeance, way louder than before so I notice it even when there is a lot of background noise. Distracting as fuck and very irritating especially at work etc.
