I have tried really hard trying to get this sort of effect
there's obviously a lot of reverb and layering but the kick's still quite clean and hard hitting
first example I can think of is the kick in this:


anyone had any success here?

I don't think it's JUST the kick, but also the mixdown. There's the reverb, but also stereowidth on the mids/highs of all the drums and they actually sit relatively low in the mix.

Sounds like the kick is made up of multiple layered sounds...there's at least one sharp-ish transient, with some more 'out of focus' lower end stuff layered.

well to me, it sounds like a phat 808 sound, that seems quite wide as someone has said for some reason, and like some other light kick sound ontop which isnt that loud, but the punch is coming form the loud phat 808 lol

its most likely from a sample pack

throw a return track on with a ton of reverb and LOW-passing to make it sound distant i would think. seeing as how that's what happens when you hear something far away, get more reverberations and the high-end loses power fastest.

then, keep your send track the same, and add some parallel comp to keep it punchy.

then you can play with the levels of your send, return with verb/LOW passing, and other return with heavy comp.

^^^ You mean low-passing. I agree, it sounds highly low-passed, then reverbed. Also try chopping the transient off the kick sample?

Damn. That seems like a good reverb bus, and some really stereo mixing. All I know for sure is that shit is HARD.

imo more than just a bit a of reverb on a kick is too much. ends up sounding hollow and boomy. like others have said its probably from a sample pack, doesnt really sound like multiple layers at all. and layering kicks is retarded i hope no one does that.

You can apply the reverb to the higher frequencies of the kick. Maybe lowpass the kick, and highpass the original sound for the verb send?

Also, you can reduce the attack in a transient shaper. Sounds that are further away have less transient.

yeah, god damn, I've been ally bad about that lately... Saying high pass instead of high-cut or low pass... Whoops.

but yeah, your idea later is a good one too, reverberate the high end before you cut it out of the main channel.

The kick sounds as if all of it's "attack" was removed so there isn't really any punch at all, try this with a completely dry sample. possibly low pass it if you haven't achieved desired result. And if you still haven't achieved your desired result then I cannot assist you any further.

thick sample, verb, tons of compression, lowpass, widen.

layer to taste, especially for that low-end punch.
