Sean Marbaugh - Freak Her (Electronic/Dubstep)

Post by slippery42388 » Thu Feb 07, 2013 3:49 am

This is the second dubstep song I've made. It's currently ranked 17th on the dubstep charts on soundclick. I have yet to get any actual feedback on the song, so please let me have it! Don't worry I don't get offended! So don't hold back :)

Also including my third dubstep song(didn't want to double post). I pictured a happy family playing together at the park, when a life changing event happens. The event would normally end the way any family lived their life, but this family stays strong, and pulls through... Kind of a cheap little story, but that's kind of what kept going through my head as I made it :D

Hi Sean. I will give you my 'two cents'.

Freak her: The first half of the intro starts of well. It's catchy, and had my attention. I thought ooh - interesting - what's next, expecting the second half to build, but it didn't, instead it sounded a little confused. No biggie, just get a bit more going on at that point, maybe some percussion. Then it dropped, I liked it. I had my monitors turned way up, and the sub bass was shaking. Definitely working at this point for me, simple but heavy. Then after 4 bars it changed, and got hectic. It remained that way until the end of the track, with a few more 'changes', but overall the dynamic didn't change. My advice would be to listen to some of your favorite tracks, analyse the structure, and put it to use.

When the world ends: The intro is pretty, and leads nicely into the next part. I found the structure a little bit confusing, but individually there are some real good and heavy elements. Especially like the part at 2:18. The part at 3:20 though, far too much going on. Very hectic sounding. Sonically there is too much going on at certain parts, so maybe try to be a bit more brutal with EQing sounds. Remember, a sound that works well on its own more likely than not will not work in the mix without some sort of EQ.

Overall great effort. My suggestion when you've finished something like this would be to step back and consider the structure. Cut whole sections out if you have to if that's what it takes to get the structure right. A track with a decent structure rather than 10 'pretty' parts will work much better.

To paraphrase what someone else said to me once in regards to mixing and EQ "playing live (and writing) is like building a ship on the sea and having all the freedom to sail it. Writing and recording a track is like building a ship in a bottle"

Thank you for the feedback :) Yes I'm fully aware my song structure totally blows. I'm fairly new to making music in general, so I really appreciate the advice. hmmm I really don't know what else to say other then thank you lol. I'll be sure to take your advise you heart, and really work on my song structure, and EQ from here on out.

cymbals cutting through too harshly, definitely work on the mixdown. would like to see some more work on your bass design too. feel like it's too in your face for too long, what was said above about structure is true. have a little build down and then drop back in, else it can be tiring. good job though!
