Actually some spiders make silk "parachutes" to travel long distances, traveling by wind. It's known as ballooning http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballooning_%28spider%29
You can actually find frozen spiders in the upper atmosphere from them doing this.
Could be a natural disaster or some change to their habitat caused a mass migration.
Spiders are pretty damn cool.
