Recording synth direct to audio

Post by Udyret » Thu Feb 21, 2013 7:12 pm

Hi there im using Cubase today. And i was wondering if there is anyway i can use synths like massive etc with my midi keyboard and record direct to audio files instead of midi? So far ive been recording in midi then exporting the files to then import them again for using them as samples.

Hope you understand my question!: )

Cheers!

I think you're misunderstanding a few things a little. Your MIDI keyboard is sending midi data to the VSTi which tells it to play notes, the synth it's self outputs audio. You can't 'record direct to audio files', well "directly" anyway (but I'm being a little pedantic).

To record live audio out of your synth you'll need to route the channel your VSTi is on to a second channel and set it to record it's input. Usually your VSTi's channel will be routed straight to the master buss which is hard routed to your soundcard, not possible to record master buss out within your DAW as it's leaving the program at that point. So routing your channel to a second channel (a buss will do) and setting that channel to record will, derp lol, record any sound coming in to it.

On your VSti's channel, it's receiving MIDI, that MIDI is transfered in to audio data and sent through the master buss, you just need to intercept that signal post VSTi and rout it to a channel that's set to print the audio to wav (record enabled). Of course you will need to have the project playing when you want to record something.
