I'vbe been researching it a bit. I understand what it does (i think) but Im curious, Is it something just to be sued for an overall mix or can/should it be done with every instrument?

thanks

best way to describe it is that its similar to frequency splitting, but instead of splitting by frequency, you split it between the mono and stereo

That definitely makes sense. Is it "better" to use m/s EQing on all of your sounds or is it "better" to just use it on your mix?

Also, I'm doing some stereo delaying (using Abletons Stereo Delay) for widening purposes. Will I potentially get phasing issues by using the stereo delay and ten m/s EQing.

thanks

Well for widening yeah i use widening, but only one select things. My homemaster set up is basically a mid/side eq and compressor that feeds into the limiter and i find it helps to brighten things up

Would you mind elaborating a bit. What select things do you use it on. Or better question when would you personally use m/s on individual instruments? I may be thinking about it too hard but I recently used the stereo delay followed by m/s and it just sounds so wide and clean I feel like I should use it on everything.

i guess you could use it on individual elements, certainly falls under the "if it sounds good do it, if not dont do it" montra. if you want i can upload a screen shot to help you understand it

as you can see, the thor splits the signal into m/s, then i have an eq and compressor on each of them then another thor to sum them together, that signal is sent to the scream 4 for tape sat. then onto the master section which is the compressor and limiter. hope that helps.

(this is on my master channel btw)
