"90% of the population thinks a DJ is "making music" live". Just read that in another thread and didn't want to derail it.
Is this true? If not, what are most peoples impression of deejaying?

I think a good DJ is doing this in a sense. By combining to two things in a new and interesting way. But I don't imagine this is what that thread is referring to.

When I bring bitches over to my flat they'll point at my turntables and ask "is this what you make your music on?". So yeah, most people are pretty clueless. I do think they know that it isn't exactly like making music, but I don't think people in general know what a remix is or how it's made and I think that's the basis for a lot of confusion, people confusing mixing with remixing and associating that with DJ:s. That and also people producing under their DJ names.

Nice!

This is what I think really made people confused about the difference in a producer and a DJ. Most of my friends think that a producer only make beats that are only for mainstream-like songs with singing/rap, and that DJs make music for club settings.

Ya, I've had to explain the difference between dj and producer to a few of my friends.
fragments, I get what you're saying: creating a derivative work. I just don't know if this "90% of people" understand it as that or think...well I don't know what they think. What do people who don't know anything about producing or dj'ing think it is?

There's quite a large tornado of misinformation out there. I once saw someone reference a producer as a "loop maker". Lots of people missed the whole, 'producers touring' thing, since it's rather new that producers are playing shows. And even though producers are touring, they're still called djs. So yeah, start correcting people.

nah dude. great producers take you on magical sonic journeys. it's the producers who use the same patch for a whole year and just write different music with it that get boring and play boring drop to drop sets just showcasing their shit.
true artists are the best to see live.

I'mma just let that one slide because... You're right. Fair point, lol. However, this applies not only to the members of the fairer sex who on occassion, against their better knowledge, grace my humble place of residence with their presence, but also to the bros. Shit, most of my friends still have no clue what it is I do and I've been doing it for years now.
I have noticed that people do tend to know a little bit more about this since DJ:ing became more popular though, a lot of people are DJ:ing for a hobby now, even if it's on Virtual DJ and some $80 controller. So obviously just a little bit more.

i get this a lot, i think more than 90% of my friends think this.
the worst people iv come across are ravers.
a friend of mine who plays at local dnb nights played 1 of my tracks, my so called friends that were with me shut me down, they thought i didnt make it just because i wasn't on the decks.
also they constantly tell me to go to those raves just so i learn how to do better tunes, they say downloading tunes off the net doesn't teach you how its done. i don't know how i put up with it tbh

I agree to an extent, when a producer isn't very diverse or doesn't have a long list of serious tunes it can get boring. However, I think you're getting mixed up a bit because that makes them a bad DJ. I've seen Bonobo play a set with all of his own tunes and it was mind blowing, but that's because he's a good DJ. It doesn't matter if you're a DJ or producer that DJ's, it's whether or not you're a good DJ. Also most importantly producers have dubs and for me there's something special about seeing a producer play their own tunes.

My thoughts exactly.
I'll happily takes props for creating music live even though I am just putting vinyl on a deck.. If they're that dim i'll let them believe it.

To be fair what works in headphones/bedrooms can be pretty different to what works on a soundsystem.
