I can't even handle the sub genre classification that's happening but anyway, i counldn't help but to notice a new kind of sounds people are making right know, and I find it very interesting.
I'm talking about stuff like that :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAfJDiaNHy0
It's very obvious that there's a lot of filter modulation going on, but still I can't manage to get close to these sounds. Also, I found that the sub is overwhelmingly powerful, without making it muddy. Do you have an idea how is this achieved ? I was thinking of layering a "high sub", being a sine at around 80hz, but maybe there's another way ?

A reese bass with multiple notch filters, some flanger/phaser/chorus to taste, and liberal distortion. That's about the basis. Cook to taste.
If desired, cut highs before distortion for a bit more "crunchy" rather than "sizzly" sound.

The same way as DnB: Making sure it doesn't clash with other elements. The kicks seem to be really snappy and quick.

Also, someone merge this to the reese bass thread.

Also clever eqing to cut mud, really i find most of the mud around 300-500hz area.So just eq out chunks or a little at the time to cut that mud down.

True. However now that we have a sub forum specifically dedicated to sound design, i thought making a separate thread for a kind of sound made sense. My bad if it doesnt.

Searching through that one could also be helpful. I'm pretty sure you're not the first one to ask this.

Yeah I suppose so, although theres a lot of hollow-reese i.e. glitch/neuro-hop bass stuff in that thread, I've actually posted a few KOAN sounding tips/pics

iv been making sounds like this recently in IL harmor. using a square wave (with 4-8 unison voices SLIGHTLY detuned) and harmor's phaser + plenty of distortion does the trick.
im guessing the same will work if you detune a few square waves and use phasers, filters and distortion. the trick is catching sweet spots with the phaser (so automate it manually).
also you'll get very drastic changes if you tweak any effect before the distortion.
this technique works really well for typical neurohop stuff

I'll definately have a look at this. I recently discovered what Harmor was capable of, especially with the Harmonic Unison pitch which gives crazy stuff. Thanks a lot, i'll experiment

split bands, clipping style distortion on the mid/high band, saturate the low end a bit, compress it a few times together, eq out the 200~500hz mud and have fun.
