Crunk / Dubstep

Post by mofomaphone » Sun Aug 26, 2007 5:17 pm

What kind of dubstep do you folks think lends itself nicely to mixing with crunk/dirty south rap? I understand "thugstep" isn't always warmly received, but I find stuff like disko rekah, grit, some of bengas tunes, mix really well with that dirty south rap stuff. two genres that really get your lean on.

so yeah, opinions? recommendations?

Most dubstep works well with a little Crunk on top, imo! Kinfolk Kia Shine - So Crispy instrumental is a banger! It's something I'm definitely trying to use to help cross people over in Atlanta.

i swear crunk has a similar tempo to dubstep and those 808 kick / basslines are nasty

obviously not all of it sounds like that but some tracks sure

ah yeah I'd say so thats because its pretty close

there's been grime cats from the UK on Houston radio shows before - the cadence and double time spitting of crunk is similar to the rapid fire flow of grime snapping... crunk definitly dwells below 80 bpm's so its prob around 140-150bpms I'd say probably closer to dubstep tempo barring the proper mixture of lean

yes crunk has to be understood within its own context to be appreciated - liquid codeine and kush really speeds this process along

yeah the hovsep and myself are throwing our third monthly jam in montreal called bass culture in a few weeks.

this time around we have giovanni marks (aka subtitle) coming out. the man is a legend, and his grasp of the english language is mind boggling. anyways, hes going to be throwing dome some raps and freestyles for the night.

so we figured we'd forgo our usual formula and spend the night leaned out, playing the houston screwed stuff, crunk, and pure vibes dubstep.

there was also that sick Tasty Grits 12" with the Crime Mob vocal - http://www.hardtofindrecordsrecordstore ... 1801_1.mp3

i reckon the combination works really well in the right context

i think the instrumentals of crunk hold their own i just don't like alot of the rappin its just not what i'm looking for thought the similarities between grime and crunk are easily drawn i think grime has a better lyrical structure then crunk
