Sleep Producing

Somehow every night, I find myself at like 4 in morning subconsciously like making a beat in my head while half asleep, no matter how much I try and have a clear head at night. I've tried limiting myself to not producing within four hours before I go to bed. I also read for about an hour and then meditate for about 30 minutes just trying to clear my mind completely before I go to sleep, and also drink some sleep aid tea. No matter how relaxed and clear of a mind I have before I actually go to sleep, I somehow find myself halfasleep in the middle of producing a beat in my head at like 4 in the morning without even doing it consciously. I have somewhat recently stopped taking anxiety medication such as Xanax and Klonopin roughly only about 4-5 months ago after being on them for 3 years, so I guess that could possibly have something to do with it. I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem though, and what do they do to help alleviate this?

Man I have shit like this all the time, not limited to waking up thinking of melodies/ideas/drums etc... the other day I watched this Vice docu about a guy that's printing 3D guns, I woke up at like 5am and found myself having a half-concious self-debate about the legalities and governement control of printing 3D objects didn't go back to sleep till 6 :P. No joke, I'm weird :6:

If you're looking for a technically non-medical sleep aid, try Melatonin tablets they always seem to help me.

Shit really got weird for me when I realized that I was actually "running" my DAW software in my head when I'm in the state you describe. Like, my brain is running a virtual copy of the software.

Man, Xanax messes people up, especially after such prolonged use.

All I can say, is that if you've got something to "say", "write it down". I know it's a melody or a drum beat or whatever, get to your DAW and jot it down. Once you do, you'll find that you can relax because subconsciously your body/mind knows that you've noted it down and will be somewhat satisfied with the fact that you were able to save it.

You're in an alpha brain wave state immediately before/after you sleep.

Fuck getting out of bed more than necessary, I just keep a notepad next to the bed to write ideas in so I can get on with sleeping.

My buddy is obsessed with these 3-D printers and the idea of it goes over my head lol. But I always find myself trying to sleep and making music in my head, I mean I do it all day pretty much. Even when I'm listen to a new song I've never heard sometimes (except at concerts/clubs!). I think it's just a subconcious thing that all passionate musicians do to stimulate our minds :) I'll sometimes be at work with a beat in my head and sometimes making sounds with my mouth and then I start bobbing and getting into it, and them a minute later half way through the drop somebody will look at me with that "wtf is wrong with this guy" look... I mean I spend all day either making music or learning new techniques when I'm not at school or work, it's what Im passionate about and if I do not become a successful producer/dj, I will become successful recording/mixing/mastering engineer, it's what I'm going to school for, so no matter what I' going to be in the music industry... And good luck to you in your endeavors, as well as anybody else who is as passionate as I/we are about music

I seem to have a similar thing which I found last night.

Going through my usual can't sleep, over thinking mode :( When I decide to start making some music in my head. As soon as I did I felt all of my thoughts and obsessions just melt away, it was like I had a vice round my head that was loosened and I fell straight to sleep. I'm gonna try this again but fingers crossed I've found a new way to knock myself out at night :D

When I read the thread title I thought this was about practicing producing within lucid dreams. I was disappointed.

Oh god, there is nothing like being half asleep, you got this sick vocal line, melody, pattern, and you tell your self, Ima just sleep for another hour, I'll program it when I wake up... 2 hours later, "FUCK" How did that melody go again

X__X I hate when this happens...

This is offtopic, but fuck they're insanely cool. If you have any remote amount of skill/talent with 3D modelling or design software you can literally make anything with one... in your home :D

I pretty much dream about this stuff every night. Some nights it's more intense than others but happens pretty much every night. It's a good thing I think :)

This happens to me a lot as well. If its late and I have a song in my head, I take out my phone and use a voice recorder or something and beatbox the song into it and produce it the next day

Every. Single. Night.

I really want to do something about it, but at 3am my bed is way to comfy to get out of to try and make a beat. And I don't able the luxury of being able to write or record while in bed (my wife gets pissed if I mess with her sleep).

what's more important, your marriage or your music career?

hint: it's not your marriage
