Background for those not familiar: yesterday 3 people got convicted for setting fire to their house in order to frame an ex-lover. 6 or 7 kids died in the fire. They claimed benefits as well.

Yep, clearly the welfare state is entirely to blame for the actions of an individual, daily mail bringing the truth as ever

Yeah, completely why people like this exist. I mean Harold Shipman killed like 200 more than this guy but at least he had a job

Shipman made a fortune off the death certificates too.

In all seriousness though, this is reaching even for the DM to try and link this to benefits.

Not even close tbh, they had a load of pro-fascist articles in the 20s-30s when Lord Rothmere owned the paper, for example there was an article in 1933 called 'Youth Triumphant' that praised izan accomplishments and contained lovely lines like this:
The Daily Mail wrote:"The minor misdeeds of individual sizan would be submerged by the immense benefits the new regime is already bestowing upon Germany"
or this informative piece from 1938:

As far as recent times for The Daily Mail goes though, the OP article is particularly low

That's deep.

I was having a conversation over lunch with some mates about, eventhough we are all pretty fucking liberal left wing music nerds, you can't help but think a truly free press can't exist in the current political/economic world. And that regulation and accountability is the only forward. The fact the Daily Mail gets to promote it's self as a newspaper rather than an opinion trash mag, that people will ready that headline and believe it, pushes the boundaries of what a free press and I guess by logical extension, freedom of speech, should allow. It's deliberate misinformation and political propaganda being purported as investigated fact.

If you think the front page is bad you should read A.N Wilson's article - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/artic ... dency.html

how could anybody be convinced that benefits caused this as opposed to the fact the guy was a fucking moron with a violent and dodgy past?

It has been speculated that his motivation was not to discredit his ex (that was just the way he executed the plan) and was in fact because he was due to lose custody of the kids (he was due in court later on the afternoon after the fire happened) and therefore he would lose the bulk of his state benefits which have allowed him to live that ridiculous lifestyle.

Obviously this can't be proved either way and I am definitely not saying that I agree with the mail's portrayal of this whole saga. However it could be said that this theory is consistent with his behaviours in relation to the kids and how it seems quite obvious he was more interested in what benefits he would obtain from his excessive reproduction rather than the joys of fatherhood.
