Okay dudes, got a gig coming up in a couple weeks and it's not really a hardcore dubstep joint so I'mma be playing a lot of house to kick it off, then drop down to some moombahcore/110 bpm shit for a while and then start working my way up to some 140 and beyond for the final part so I can get most of my tracks in the set. But there's a lot of weird tempo changes and while some work fine I was wondering if any of you had any neat tips on those long bpm jumps, for example 110 > 140 since both are so common in dubstep, or know of any dubstep DJ:s who frequently do this that I could look to for inspiration.

What I find works well is find a tune that has a remix in a different tempo with a decent length of sample before the drop. I remember going from dubstep to "drumstep" using Diplo and Datsik's Pick Your Poison. Mix in the original mix with what's playing, let the first drop play, cue up Figure's remix at the "Pick your poison" line, when the buildup on the original gets to the sample press play and slap the crossfader across. Boom you're at 175 from 140 in an instant

As well as that I'd say if you're going to be dropping tempo, best to do it at a breakdown in a song where it won't be as noticeable.

If you're gradually upping the tempo, It can sound pretty cool to do that while the drums are still playing. That speeding up feel can add some energy to a mix.

the first beat of a breakdown with a crash and a downsweep works well and is a safe bet usually. it's hardly a technical transition but to only do it a few times a set is a-ok

Other options :

- Find "transition tracks" that change bpm
- Massive reverb on track A during a drum-less break and fade to track B
- Loop a word or something and reduce the lengh, pitch up, and use it as a riser while you introduce another track via the buildup.

Look for a couple of tunes with the bpm transitions you want. If you haven't done any of these other tricks before and your gig is only a few weeks away you may be biting off more than you can chew!

Do a 16 bar slow crossfade blend with drums playing on both tracks and then mean-mug at all the confused people trying to dance.
The slower the transition the better.

As someone who frequents concerts, I'd say it doesn't matter what you do, as long as the music is still playin at a danceable pace it doesn't matter to me.

I've seen i go from 165 to 140 with minimal mixing. And I danced my ass off. The crowd needs a chance to adjust so I woul at least have 16-32 bar breaks but too log and were bored
