An average progressive house template?

Post by BYTEME » Thu Apr 18, 2013 2:40 am

A lot of progressive House tracks or even just Electro-Pop tracks use a basic template that I hear a lot.

I hear usually vocals processed and with a lot of reverb or auto-tune maybe.
A side-chained saw chord progression.
4x4 House pattern but the kick is usually very loud with a heavy amount of bass.
And some melodic plucks maybe.

That's just what I usually hear in some average club-banging House tracks.

Now how would I make one?

I have a lot of problems getting a good supersaw to sound good. And I also suck at side-chaining.
Then I also have problem with getting the bass to not peak like crazy. (My compression is not so good at all. I STILL have trouble understanding it.. )

What synthesizers have good already-set presets on them? I use Massive, Oddity, Magic8bitplugin, FM8, and the FL Studio stock synthesizers (3xOSC.)
Keep progressing, one day you'll be great. :)

Watch this video, it helped me understand compression more - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gU_Vs6ux6w

And dude seriously follow your signature's wisdom and progress past trying to get a "template" to make music, every post I read of yours is basically asking for specific numbers on how to do certain things. Music is an art not a science, try and make something new. It is going to take a spectacular tune in the format you describe to get noticed as you will blend in with the other million producers doing the same thing but if you try and get outside the box and make a tune that breaks the norm and is still a "club-banging" track it will be a lot easier for you to stand out. Just my £0.02

Yeah you outline a basic template and then, what? You want us to quote it back to you?

Step 1: Practice composition, arrangement, sound design and mixing.
Step 2: Then practice more.
Step 3: If your tracks are still shit, go to Step 2. Otherwise, go to step 2.

1. Unless you record some vocals, or have someone to record them for you, then forget about it.
2. If you don't understand sidechaining, then a template is the least of you're worries.
3. Find a sample that doesn't sound like shit. See how it's fat and has lots of bass? EQ to taste.
4. Try 16th notes with a short decay and release. Start with something simple. Like a square/saw in massive and add flavor to taste.

Stop thinking about why you can't do xyz, but figure out WHY you can't do xyz. You know what your after, google the shit put of it till it makes sense. :4:

Oh thanks dude, that's hella old though. Back from the days of the secret ninja blog club. I've thought about starting it up again but it's such a pain to try to keep it updated constantly.

i thought progressive house was like 90s minimal instrumental type stuff, definitely not loud kicks autotuned vocals and sidechained saw basses
