Thinking about buying my first vinyl player, need some tips

Post by zeta » Thu Apr 18, 2013 2:58 am

I thought it was high time I decided to get a vinyl player, since there's a great selection of secondhand vinyl in a shop just down the road from me...

I don't think I'll be stocking too many new ones - many one or two I consider essential to listen to on vinyl, the rest just secondhand vinyl like for classical, or jazz.

Going to have a look on some sites, but I'm looking for one that's reasonably portable, and can be bought on a student budget - anyone have any suggestions/tips/recommendations related to buying a player or just vinyl in general for a newbie?

Don't forget you're going to need a phono pre amp, an amplifier and speakers as well. Most of them can be found pretty cheap in charity shops or on eBay.

Alternatively you could get some active speakers but in my opinions hifi separates sound a lot better.

Happy hunting!

+1... But, you don't need a pre-amp if you get it as one unit with the turntable though? If you buy them separate however, you can easily upgrade over time, or even do some DIY... saves money over time if you want quality :4:

You could actually call them phonographs, turntables, record decks, decks, record players or gramophones...

Check out drive types as well, direct drive is better for DJing than belt drive for DJing as well as general wear I think...
