my macbook is really laggin out these days when im producing. CPU is constantly quite high and ive done everything i can to try and minimize it. The thing is almost 4 years old and im running some CPU hogs like alchemy and izotope stuff, so im not too surprised.
Ive been thinking about getting a iMac, 2.9GHz quad-core with 8 GB of memory... my question is will this be enough for what i need? i feel like its leagues ahead of my old macbook but wanted to get all your opinions...

You might want to wait until next month - the next generation of Intel CPUs is about to be released.

Yeah they'll be a lot faster than a 4 year old laptop, should be fine for your needs.

Build a Hackintosh if you want a Mac with superior internal organs that will last for several years (for much cheaper). If you don't want to bother, go ahead and get your iMac or follow whatever other suggestion you like best.

I got a 500gig ssd for my mac. It's priceless. VSTs and Samples take so much space. The whole ableton packs take like 40g by themselves. Also an audio interface really helps with the CPU when you got a lot of tracks (+ you kinda need one to hook up your monitor unless you're using a cheap ass 1/8 to 1/4 mono converter). Some things to consider.
