Searching for a software

Hi, guys!
I have a few questions for you and hope that you can help me answer them. Basically I am searching for one music making program, which... I don't know much about it.
It might even not be made for dubstep, but it just looked mostly like something for it. Well, a little story:
Once I was flying from Milano to Vilnius. It was an early morning flight, so I had to spend a night in airport with bunch of people sitting on the floor, sleeping in their sleeping bags and just boringly waiting... And there I met some guys. We talked, watched a movie and one guy, who was studying music making in Denmark, showed this cool program, which he used for making music. At that time I didn't paid much attention to it
, so I don't remember much. Just that it looked very simple. The guy just turned on the mic, pushed a button and the sound of his voice was changing according to the sound witch was assigned for that button. I don't know much about those programs, but, as being a musician, I saw quite a bunch of recording programs and they basically look the same: a panel with tracks, mixing console... and this one looked totally different: it just had buttons set out randomly in one page and connected to each other by lines. You can record sounds to those buttons or download them and use them like effect pedals. So... I'm searching for this software... 
It's probably very difficult to say relying on this not very informative explanation... 
But... maybe someone have seen something familiar?
Anyway... if not, there is another question.
Like I said, I am a musician. I play guitar (electric, acoustic), a little piano and my main instrument is drums. I played in a bunch of bands and now I am looking for a software to use in one project. I have a set of electronic drums and want to make something where I can use drums+electric guitar+vocals. I need a software witch will work like effect pedals and could easily change the voice right on the spot (performing live). I mostly wanna use it for vocals, but if you could connect drums, guitars or other instruments to it, it would be even better. As well something, where you can record a track on the spot and play it repeatedly right away. Any info for that kind of software, DAW's, mixers, effect boxes that can be used for that is appreciated. Best if it would be as easy as possible in using live.
