problems monitoring sub bass

Post by näjt » Sun Sep 02, 2007 6:49 pm

ok, i'm monitoring on proper studio monitor speakers and a studio sub. When I'm sitting right between the main speakers everything sounds great, but when I move back a bit, the sub takes over the mix completely. I know this will happen anyway to a certain extent because of how the different frequencies travel through air and objects, but this is really pretty drastic.

The other problem I have is that when I listen to the mix on headphones (again, they're purpose-built monitoring headphones) the sub practically dissapears from the mix. How the fuck can the bass be just right, overpowering AND almost silent in the same mix? what am I doing wrong?

standing waves. it's to do with the acoustic properties of your room and the fact that some frequencies build up more due to the width/height of your room. compare the mix on your headphones to other tunes you know are mixed down well. no standing waves in your headphones. not much you can do about the serious sub that headphones cant reproduce except for checking your mix in other rooms too.

there's another thread along these lines here:

it's ok, I figured out the problem, I forgot to flick the phase switch back on my sub after I was messing about with it earlier.
