Anyone here willing to explain how compression works? Perhaps a link to a good tutorial?

Try this with a drum loop

try setting attack and release to zero with ratio very high and threshold set to -30 db or whatever will make it compress all the time.

Slowly increase the attack time until the inital part of the drum sounds develop the amount of aggresion you want.

Increase the release so the volume glides from squashed to unsquashed in time with the rythm or feel.

Back the ratio off as much as you can until just before you start to lose the effect you developed with the attack and release.

Do the same with the threshold. Lower threshold = smaller more focused sound. Higher Threshold = bigger less focused sound.

if anyone is interested, i was gonna upload a loop, and see what each producer can do to it masteting wise!

anyone on this? it be good to compare mastering skills
