Im due to do one. There has been a lot of cross-pollination and crossing over between these genres and its quite interesting to me. I would like to try and document and illustrate how this has happened in the last 6-7 years. To me it all falls into a broader context of genres mixing and bleeding into each other, but obviously just stating that would make for a very dull article. So if you feel like giving me some info and feedback or even simply relevant tune links, that would be highly appreciated!

i'll post a few up off the top of my head

2562 should definitely get referenced, as well as the parallel development of dub techno and stuff like Pole and Rhythm & Sound and shared aesthetics (which are in turn often borrowed from Dub proper - spaciousness, the idea of studio as instrument, as well as use of noise, filtering, etc.)

I remember this as a starting point of the rising Dubstep/Techno crossover thing and lots of people became aware of the possibilities if you combined the two styles. After that there were 2562, Martyn, Peverelist stepping up with a new vibe to the sound; Ramadanman was played by Villalobos etc.

2006-2010 RIP dubstep/techno crossover my favourite period of dubstep which sadly didn't last.

in all seriousness check out that thread and mix friendly editing mentioned. notable names to mention could include - skull disco and offshoots (appleblim, shackleton), 2562, peverelist, blunted robots, TRG, martyn, early hessle audio, headhunter, scuba and hotflush around 2008-2010, etc. also mention techno producers who took influence from dubstep: villalobos, modeselektor etc.

big moments include aforementioned villalobos playing skream and ramadanman - but even more so him remixing shackleton blood on my hands and cassy opening her panorama bar mix with the original version of the tune, the cross pollination with the berlin minimal techno scene (berghain, hardwax etc.) and especially scuba's substance parties at berghain, dubstep allstars vol. 6 and 7 and martyn's fabric 50 mix.

the end of the article you could speak about the shift of dubstep/techno producers towards straight house and techno, most of the names above are not making dubstep anymore. gradually most of the producers making that sound began to move closer and closer to house and techno, particularly through the post-dubstep/uk bass media hype construction. look at hotflush nowadays compared to 2008/-2010 - no dubstep to be seen!

you could also talk about the gradual narrowing of dubstep as dungeon/brostep with little to nothing in between. I remember back during 2009-2010, dubstep could have been almost anything @ 140bpm with sub bass and the dubstep/techno hybrid sound was a reflection of that. I dunno if the move away from dubstep to house/techno by many producers was because of this narrowing of the genre or it helped to facilitate it further.

U can definitely hear the techno in a lot of dungeon today, like icicle for example

what exactly is techno? the boundaries between techno, house, trance, etc are so ill-defined. I've always thought techno was a catch-all for all 125-130 stuff (house, trance, etc), sorta like EDM but minus the dubstep and hiphop and stuff like that.

yes ignorant people usually label anything they dont know as "Techno"

The clue is in the name "Tech" futuristic influences and such.

The only way to understand it is to listen to a lot imo

Techno is like house music, but unlike house, techno has a more industrial feel. This makes sense, because Techno originated in Detroit which is based around the car making industry.

Think it should be mentioned that some of the founders of the dark garage/dubstep movement used to be techno producers.

Artwork released many massive techno tunes under the alias grain. Richie hawtin used to Cain his tunes all the time.

Benny Ill released tunes in many genres under many different alias's but made a hell of a lot of techno on his own and with other producers. Some of which as Ben garner and lost sector.

when people never had a name for this new strain of dubstep I heard it called tech-step a few times as it sounded like a garage - techno fusion with such a heavy influence from Benny ill I guess.
