Having only ever mixed on controllers / cdj's, how much harder is mixing with vinyl?

In that same boat as you, mate. Friends tell me it's much harder and I'd have to say it looks harder.

yeah it's all about practice

probably harder than cdjs imo but i enjoy it a lot more

id say its easier than cdjs but i learnt on vinyl so im biased.. you get much more control of the tune plus you can see straight away where the breakdowns etc are.
theres something about physically moving the record that makes it seem easier in my mind than using cdjs

I'm just too dumb for CDJs, really. too many buttons, can't figure the whole "cue" stuff out. 1210s are easy. press play. enjoy.
practice is important, especially since the analog pitch fader doesn't quite work the same way as the digital ones from the cdjs. every piece is unique and has its own little imperfections, tiny jumps in resistance (and thus speed) might occur on different spots along the faderway. so yeah, definitively gotta use the ear, can't rely on "0.6 is 1bpm when it comes to drum n bass".

you'll get used to handling slightly warped records as well. these can be a real lustkiller in the beginning (and even later on, to be fair).

Learnt on belt drive turntables, then got 1210's and suddenly found i could beatmatch a lot better than i thought. I find cdj's and controllers super easy.
Turntables always tho otherwise how can you pretend to be the DMC world champion?

hm, I just thought of something. if you're looking into mixing hip hop and the likes, it'll take you a few years to get all your scratches and stabs right. never really stop learning that stuff.
dubstep is pretty easy though, with the song structures being straight forward and no need to scratch and cut.

i dont think its as easy as cdjs but its certainly more fun

Yeah it's just i got hold of a belt drive turntable so have been buying vinyl recently. There's something about records that just makes the whole thing a better experience than just downloading a tune and listening to it. Probably gonna get a set of decent turntables and a mixer when summer starts and can finally start mixing some vinyl only tunes as well.

I find it really hard to beatmatch dusbtep on cdjs when its not exactly 140 but it's easy on turntables

This reminds me, need to get a second turntable and a mixer

same here! except don't need a mixer

I like the stiffness you get with the pitch on a set of technics it feels like every little movement is justified.. whereas with cdjs the looseness of the pitch makes me feel like theres less control

my press of Acid Trip is actually warped as hell, my roommate left it on my table next to the radiator... B-side literally sticks to the slipmat and will give you a workout when rewinding (the platter will actually follow and spin backwards with the vinyl), whilst the A-side jumps when touched ever-so-slightly. It took me a while to figure out how to start this one, since it lacks traction when releasing like any other plate, thus being late about two beats... really annoying and frustrating to mix.
