Monitors - 8 Inch Cone VS 5 Inch
Ez guys, i've been doing my research on monitors and these are the two that i'm stuck between. I need the low end response from a bigger cone, but i will be working in a very small room, say 3 average steps from front to back. The room will be fully treated, but i can't help thinking that the MR8 will be overkill in such a small room. Anyone had any experience will these monitors?

probably a bit too big for your room. and honestly you just have to use your imagination a bit with a 5" cone but its no harder to mix your sub levels.
Re: Monitors - 8 Inch Cone VS 5 Inch
I've downsized monitors from an 8" to a 6.25" and now to a 5.25" and I find that with the smallest monitors I have a much easier time mixing my sub bass levels. They are a really quality monitor and I think with the right set you can get a really accurate representation of the low end with them being a 5", it totally depends on the monitor itself, your room and treatment, the ones I went with are Nuemann KH120 and the low end is much more defined and clear than with the larger monitors I had.
I don't know which is better for you, just thought I'd chime in on my own experience and that's that I get more than enough low end with these, but that's my room and these speakers so it's hard to gage what it'd be like in your space with whichever monitors you end up with! Good luck with your search

I also recently "downgraded" to smaller, but higher quality monitors and find it much easier to mix bass...and mixing in general is just better.

Honestly, it's not really down to cone size if your room is treated (and i mean corner, Mineral wool basstraps, not foam).
Its just down to having an accurate monitor. Room nodes are most obvious in the bottom octave, so having smaller cones that cant generate the really low notes will often sound more accurate as you cant hear the loudest room nodes.
Personally i think a set of Adam F7's and acoustic treatment (5" deep absorber panels on the first reflection points and corner "superchunk" basstraps) would be my ideal home setup on a modest budget.
I dont mind the mackie MR series, but you need to go and a/b the Adam F series against them, its not even close....
