Stop worrying and just get on with it

Stop worrying about the tools and techniques and just get on with the process. This is too common a question format;
Q) Can I do [this] with [this]?

a) No, you definitely can't do [this] with [this], you'll need [that] before you can do this [this]
b) Yes, but you'll struggle
c) Yes, and don't worry about using [this] to do [this]. Greater things have been done with less
Got a problem? Find a way around it.
Something running too slow? Upgrading your setup isn't the answer.
Can't get a good sound out of something? Stop trying to and just use it

The whole happy accidents approach might seem somewhat unrefined and loose, but it's a better alternative (much better IMO) than sitting around twiddling the thumbs whilst you wait for the forum to regurgitate an answer to a question.

I've made no bones about my feelings toward too many specific sound design questions, where the point is to identify and perfectly replicate a specific sound in a specific song. But a good read through of How To Make A Noise will be time better spent than asking for a patch so you too can sound like Flavour Of The Week's latest tune Club Banger.

Ask questions by all means, I'mnot advocating that nothing should be asked and/or imitated. If that were the case we'd still be running around in caves grunting at each other in all likelihood.

However, the concept of a workaround is much overlooked in this day & age of disposable information and tools. Why figure something out if the Internet is there to find an answer? However did they make electronic music before the Internet, getting the responses via post to questions on how to program their synths must've taken ages.
. :|.
Specifically hardware on this last point (not the post bit, obviously). Tunes were made on machines and computers that a) weren't designed for that sort of thing in the first place and b) had less processing power than a modern calculator.
Or phone, I guess. Don't think a calculator as a stand alone entity given smartphones and all
Oh sh^t, my computer runs really slow when I'm processing an instance of this synth! Bounce to audio and save your processing speed. Oh no, I can't get the 10:1 compression ratio exactly right like that YouTube tutorial. Use your ears and/or stop using it altogether and concentrate on getting the mixdown sounding hot.

Basically don't let specific technical details (either hardware based performance issues or software unfamiliarities) spoil the process of actually making a tune.

This has been a Wub Rantâ„¢

I feel like asking questions for help ought to be a secondary function of the production forum, the primary function ought to be this is what I've made lately and this is how I've done it.

I find a good approach to learning is to break each individual component down and learn the shit out of it before moving on.

You get there much quicker and you stop hitting barriers as often. Most questions are less about understanding and more about creative ideas.

For example - taking a synthesis beginner as an example. Spend a day learning what an oscillator is and all of the controls on that section, day 2 learn about filters etc. Understand it before moving on.

But fuck it, sometimes just mess about!

it's so much more fun messing about with random sounds than trying to generate a precise one in a synth

I think y'all on this forum seriously underestimate the power of drugs. Artists of all mediums over history have reported that drug use was responsible for their best work. Even coffee and cigarettes can help.

And many of those artists struggled with addictions that hampered their work at times and even killed them. I dont even get how this relates to the OP tbh...

It relates to all these recent threads about inspiration and writer's block and other "meta" production issues.

Just making a general statement to the production forum. I think people need to read this again. I just see too many posts that, IMHO, show me that people are worried about the wrong shit when it comes to making music.

I don't see very many posts that show me people are in love with the process or act of making music.

Maybe I'm insane. I'm sunburned, three pints in and just had a spliff. :6:
