The lowest pitch that can be well represented on a system?

Post by ArrenMog » Wed Jul 24, 2013 8:23 pm

I've been experimenting recently with basslines that go very low in the sub frequencies and i'm just wondering where the cut off point is, where the note is so low that no sound system would ever be able to properly represent it?

Obviously each sound system will be different but i'm just wondering what you guys rekon? :6:

From what I've heard/experienced:

Average System = 42hz
Small system (laptops, phones, computer speakers) = about 80 hz.
Club System = 20hz

The conventional wisdom is D# I believe. But I don't understand why people need to go so damn low anyway. Don't you want people to hear your sub even if it's not the best system in the world? People are always saying your sub should be "between D# and F#" or something like that. Nothing wrong with an A or a B IMO.

They'll always hear it, even on a not so great system, but when they hear it on a great system, their prostate needs to be milked completely by the end of the first subnote.

yeah like that F note hits the best, or is it E im not sure lol, yeah like an A or B can be good, but it dont hit as hard, nowt wrong with having a mix of both though, you dont want constant slamming sub lol

Belt/servo motor driven loudspeakers.. Get to destroy your vital organs and house.

Think those things are supposed to reach like 120dBspl at 17hz without any crazy amps.
Doesn't have standard coil/magnet, instead it just pushes and pulls the diaphragm with a motor

Yeah I always keep the sub between F (42hz) and F (84hz). Sometimes if I have space for it I'll double it up an octave or saturate it for the benefit of crappy speakers.

17hz 120 SPL?! What the actual fuck. That's worthy of a death-liability releasing waiver.
