Getting out of bad habits

I'm starting to try and get back to dubstep after a little while. I've been struggling with a few things though which are habits of mine which I would like to break.
I'm not gonna bombard with the questions but one of my main problems are my tunes seem to not transition well at times, and sometimes sound boring. Sometimes I start with a drum track, mix it a little bit, and then I move on to a melody that can go 32 measure's. Not only is it repetitive but it can get boring. I then play around with other synths, etc to see if it can go along with the melody but this isn't working out for me. It works out when producing other kinds of music, but not this type.
I was wondering what a few of you guys do? Would it be better to make all of my sounds before even starting composing and laying out the track? Would really like some help here, I seem stuck!
