I need to get some better headphones I have been using sony 7506 which are more for monitoring and my mixes lack good bass as well as stereo width. I do not need closed headphones I am in my basement studio and it doesnt matter if sound bleeds through. I do have monitors (ikey m505) but no sub so the main thing is to get that bass mixed well so it will translate well to the car! Also stereo width is important.

I keep seeing beyerdynamic dt 990 pros pop up what do you all think of this? Could you suggest something better for the price range? (about 350 bucks)



* I like to produce music like actress, flying lots, burial etc so mixing that rumbling sub is very important.

I've heard really good things about the Sony 7520. Search for them on Gearslutz and you'll hear people raving about them.

Also if you just want something that's linear in the low end with good extension, check out the Sony XB500. They're not monitoring cans by any means but they're perfect for hearing low end. Plus they're cheap as fuck. Their frequency response has a big bass shelf but the passband is really flat. So I use them to get the bass region balanced within itself and then use my ATH M50s and Sennheiser HD595s to get the bass region as a whole sitting well with the rest of the spectrum.

In my opinion it's better to have a variety of monitoring systems instead of trying to find the one ideal set of monitors or cans. Unless you have the money to sink into perfecting your monitoring chain and room, you're best off distributing the duties across several monitoring scenarios. That's why I've got the set of bass cans with subsonic low extension, a set of closed cans with a sort of NS10 vibe in the ATH M50s, and a more neutral open silky set in the HD595s.

I do the same as sunk lo but not as extensively. Ill use my monitors, ear buds, hi fi down stairs. try to get a happy medium. Sometimes listening on different equipment can show up issues with the mix or problems with dynamics ect. I have really only experience beyerdynamics DT 100s and they are good, you need an amp though really (to get the best sound). they arent the best but they are a pretty good standard. if your mix is sounding good on them it will sound pretty damn good elsewhere.

dt990's are top.

It depends on how you look at it, but imo you can't get good stereo imaging with headphones as the localization is
never in the front. Some might say that's the reason you always get a perfect stereo image though
If you are going to mix on headphones, watch your reverb sends! 99% of people tend to overdo reverb on headphones,
particularly on closed ones of course.

Yeah plus you cant get the cross talk you would get from speakers, so the mix tends to sound different on cans. usually more spaced out sounding on the cans.

You can however simulate crosstalk with plugins like TB Isone and 112db Redline Monitor, and hardware like Presonus' VRM. Not quite the same as actually listening on monitors, but switching through the various models gives you new perspective on the mix that may be valuable when making decisions.

Beyerdynamics have a free vst emulator for various monitoring scenarios.
It's been released recently.

I'm rocking AKG 240 and Beyerdynamic dt770. The dt770s have a pretty nice bass response but the AKGs sound a little cleaner to me. I like both though.


Check this site for charted comparisons of frequency responses. It was super helpful for my mixes to see where the spikes and valleys on my cans are. And like everyone else said, test your mix downs on as many systems as possible.

What is "HD bass"? Doesn't bass by definition lack.... definition? Bass accuracy is important, maybe that's what you're referring to?

Also as far as I'm aware, the Presonus headphones are rebranded Superlux, which themselves are knockoffs of other expensive cans from AKG, Sennheiser, etc.
If you snoop around you'll find accounts of people modding Superlux headphones to sound better. They might be a good idea as a cheap secondary set of cans for reference. But probably not good for your main set if you're looking for accuracy.

It was a joke. But I still think the headphones are more than great for the price.

Thanks for the help everyone I just bought Beyerdynamic DT 990 pro's. I know they are a bit boosted in the Hi's but none the less I could feel the low end better on these than any of the others we mentioned even the 880's (which are more flat). The 990s are open so the stereo field is quite insane, you can really hear all the little reverb knock sounds in burial tracks and all that!

Im hoping all will go well here, however I am still in search of how I can feel the bass in my room like in my car so I can base the tracks off of that.... I will start another thread on subwoofers actually...



* If there is anything I should be cautious about with the 990s please let me know as I noticed that these are discontinued....
