It used to be that people said controversial shit in an effort to be provocative, maybe even make people think, but there was always a lot of irony (see: Suicidal Tendencies "I Shot Reagan," etc.)

Then over time it became more and more about the provocation and the irony and less about using these things to make a statement of some sort.
