Do you use samples for FX?

Post by bassbum » Sun Aug 11, 2013 8:27 pm

Do you guys use samples for things like white noise sweeps, risers an booms?

They can be so simple to easy to make but at the same time I offend get bored making them. They feel like more of a job than fun. After all there are endless sample packs of these things that have been done so well.

So are you guys drag and droppers or create everything?
I never use a sample for any sound that can be made on a synth just to force myself to get better at sound design, Also I like the extra control.

I use samples for more interesting risers, but for white noise stuff I usually use 3xosc and just bang some filters on it

White noise I often use an automated Massive patch I made, risers I often use 3xOSC or pitch bend my synths in unison.
For stuff like impacts I normally use samples, but layer in my own kick from the track I'm using.
For crashes I use manipulated & layered samples.

Other than that I don't use many other FX samples simply because I don't have a lot of FX in my tracks. I use foley like birds/rain/water, which are normally recorded by me or others - there's no way I could substitute this through synthesis haha.

Samples are intended to be used, if it saves you 30 minutes, why not imo.

I use like 80% samples and 20% synthesized fx... but that's probably because I have like a million fx sounds in my sample library lol, got to put them to use somehow

i use both. i dont use like white noise risers from sample packs or owt but more or less anything reversed sounds good as a riser haha. i often use thor in reason with noise and ridiculously detuned saws. i tend to automate the pich and filter in a big rising curve.

95% samples. If it's just whitenoise for a bar or a single hit i'll do that myself

i would say most of my fx are samples, some of them are sounds i've created and then re-sampled. Some of them are just random samples highly fucked with

Both of these, TBH. One of the first thing I'll do with a new synth when I'm learning it is to create a 4 and 8 bar few risers/sweeps with some filter/automation on them and bounce them out into my 'Sweeps' folder.

Then whenever I need one, I can preview through what I've made previously and drag & drop straight into the project.

The only exception for this is white noise, which I'll usually have a specific channel setup within FL with an instance of 3xOsc set to Noise waveform, linked to the mixer with a Fruity Filter on it that I can then draw in/automate as required to give specific white noise bursts depending on what I'm using it for. This also sometimes doubles as a sidechained snare layer, with the peak controller on the snare channel triggering (opening the gate, I guess?) for a burst of white noise to play whenever the snare hits, which is then EQ'd and mixed back into the snare signal to give it a bit more character.
