the working poor in the US stand up
Minimum wage is $7.25 per hour
The National Restaurant Association reckons that's enough to live on.
On Thursday, some workers are walking out on Maccas, KFC etc.
because they believe they shouldn't need to depend on food stamps to get by.

Not trying to derail this thread but that's not really that low a wage.

wherever the exploited get a better deal that's good no?
If the struggle for equity isn't pursued in places
where there is some legislated public interest advocacy,
then there's less chance for the absolutely poor
in places where multinationals and despots run rampant

Re: the working poor in the US stand up
Its a low wage when the cost of living is as high as it is though. Minimum wage here is $10/h, but how helpful is that when inflation is as high as it is? It wasn't that long ago that I can remember working for $5.35 either...Electric_Head wrote:Not trying to derail this thread but that's not really that low a wage.

Not saying those wages aren't fucked up tho, thats pretty much $2 an hour.

The price of bacon is going up but our minimum wage stays the same. Sad times.

Same here, unless I have to complain about bad service, which is rare.DRTY wrote:why? what is the correct ettiquette? Do you only tip if it's table service? I was under the impression you basically tip everyone

Re: the working poor in the US stand up
I know taking tips at a lot of fast food places is against their rules here, probably so they can keep count of the cash a lot easier for income taxes/keep kids from stealing.
I pretty much only tip wait and barstaff, and taxi drivers, because they get lower base wages, or in the case of the taxi, pay for their own gas.

Re: the working poor in the US stand up
There are a few states in the US that do that too. New Jersey is one I believe.DRTY wrote:you dont fill up your own car there? that's mental lolElectric_Head wrote:Do you guys tip counter staff?

Re: the working poor in the US stand up
South Africa is about to be hit with a Automotive strike which generally includes petrol jockies.
There is a debate whether we should also move to pumping our own gas.
I would prefer it to be honest.
