Don't mean to be a dick, but adding crackle and other noise is hardly adding "warmth".

Yeah I really don't get the point... could you not just layer the samples? Since you're not actually doing any processing such as actual tape saturation emulation you're just adding noise, not warmth.

I would use fabfilter saturn instead

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback. While I have found this plug in useful myself to add a tape "feel" to tracks, the point about it missing "tape emulation" and the ability to add the actual warmth and distortion to source audio is a good one.
I'll try and incorporate that in to a future release. At this point though it's more of a "add atmosphere' type plugin than an insert effect. But like I said, I'll look to add the tape emulation ability in the next release. Thanks for that.

Tape saturation would be something I might consider using. I'm planning on running mixes to tape hot for a final touch

Tape warmth comes from reel to reels, not cassettes, right?

Yep, magnetic tape in general. It has a natural compression as well as low cut and high pass. Everything kind of melts together, I really want a reel-to-reel.

You and me both! for now I'll have to settle with my UAD Ampex, still just not the same...

Yeah, have you considered just running your mix to cassette though?

Is that gonna give it an actual Tape warmth though?

Yes, that's the way it works.
It won't be reel 2 reel warmth but it will have a lofi quality to it that most ppl search for when looking to add warmth.

I've got to say that i've had much better results with the UAD ampex and studer A800 than i have done actually recording anything other than final mixes to tape (vocals, separate instrumental parts)! The fact that there is no noise from the UAD means i get a much better result, even when using Dolby (i'm talking regually serviced Studer and Otari machines too!)..... there is a bit of a slight advantage of bouncing 2tracks to 1/2" tape, but for all the hastle of doing it, i'd say the UAD and Slate VTM get you 99% of the way.

So versatile as well. There is actually a switch to turn noise on or off. Certain things like that you just couldn't do in the real world!

I've not tried the UAD tape plugins, but VTM is pretty dope. I really like pushing bass and kick signal into it. I don't put it on all tracks as an insert, but often on busses. It goes on the master quite often too.
I almost always turn the noise all the way down.

Note that bouncing to cassette on your boombox isn't the same as bouncing to R2R. Fundamentally they're doing similar things but there's a difference between 2" and low quality blank tapes. Ultimately though you can get quite close with EQ and saturation.

Cassette is noisy as fuck...even my nice Sony deck imparts a lot of mechanical noise.

so... what is the best way to get the tape sound? I mean I'm saying like it should sound like a tape is playing from a tape deck, nothing less. not some clean sound that has tape saturation I know how to get that, but it genuinely sounds like a tape is playing
