Is there a way to completely turn off a Filter in massive

Post by Dustwyrm » Tue Sep 03, 2013 4:35 am

I'm trying to learn how to control/turn a filter on/off by automation.

I'm trying to avoid having to turn off/lower channels feeding into that filter and just turn the filter off and on by automation.

I really want to avoid resampling to achieve this as it interrupts my workflow. I'm open to learning an advanced technique through routing to achieve this. I can't find an answer anywhere.

The little blue dot I outlined in black is what I'm mainly referring to.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also please don't suggest the cutoff filter. I'm kinda speaking along the lines of a filter like Comb or something where cutoff filter doesn't necessarily achieve what you're trying to do.

If you were not using two filter channels i was going to say put them in paralell and just switch between a filterless insert and your comb one. on this though, might have to use your DAWs automation?

what DAW you using?

I was going to ask the same thing. I know in fl you can browse parameters and just find where the filter selection/filter 1, filter2, on and off is. Don't know much about other DAW's though. :D

There isn't a parameter available that controls the on/off switch.

Perhaps I'm attempting something that doesn't make sense in a synthesizer. I could be wrong so I'm hoping someone can guide me to the answer.

Is it not possible to record the automation and then edit the parameter later?

Ok so I think I figured it out. This is only if you are using FL, for that is the only DAW that I use.

1) Click on browse parameters in your instance of Massive

2) Massive has Filter output gains on the right hand side of each filter. Click on the filter output gain and the parameter will be highlighted.

3) Go to Filter 1 output gain in your parameter browser and left click on it. Go to create automation clip. Do the same for filter 2.

4) Adjust your automation clips 100% on and off accordingly. Rotate or whatever, I don't know exactly what you're doing.

I hope this helped, if it didn't than I apologize for not understanding you correctly. :)

Turning the volume down and bypassing the filter have different effects.

Maybe just have two instances?

Thanks for the replies all:

Jonahman - You are correct, bypassing the filter and simply turning the filter volume down have very different effects.

To the previous poster - Recording automation doesn't work unless you're manipulating an actual knob, in fact it won't even record me moving an envelope around.

I think the only way is to have two instances, which is rough cuz of the extra CPU%. Not a huge fan of resampling this type of synth because it's so limiting on changing later. Guess I'll have to make do unless someone else has any suggestions.

Thanks

are you sure this doesnt work (still assuming you are using FL Studio)

Open your massive instance
Click the filter on/off button
dont click anything else, go to tools > Last Tweaked > Create automation clip
Play about with your automation clip in your arrangement window, +50% should turn it on, -50% Should turn it off (or vice versa)

Snick -

Yea it doesn't work. I don't know why but for some reason NI is keeping us away from automating the on/off filter.

The only thing I can think of is it being unnatural to the synth so it doesn't allow us.

you never said what DAW you're using.

that's pretty important for an answer.

just been looking at the bypass module and the routing tab, used the routing tab but not the bypass, maybe this can solve it

I was fiddling around within the routing tab. I'm not going to lie, I don't know a whole lot about it yet, but so far I've been unsuccessful in automating any parameters inside the routing tab. I don't think the answer lies within that tab, but I may be wrong.

Since you're not using the first filter, keep that in bypass and just automate the filter crossfade.

bingo

failing that, or if you are using both filters, sample the whole passage and physically click the button turning filter 2 off during the pass. People used to have to twist knobs n push button and shit whilst going to tape all the time

That link explains it. you route the instrument through the bypass and then automate the bypass parameter thats next to the master volume knob.

If not, then yeah, time for another instance of massive, or some resampling.

I do believe bypass only works on one oscillator.

I'm going to test these methods out tonight.

As great as resampling is sometimes, I'm not a huge fan of resampling longer basslines as I feel I am constantly adjusting them when I'm fitting in new pieces into the song. I try and only resample things that don't take up a lot of the spectrum because they're easier to tweak.
