What all is possible through sidechaining?

Ive been working on a song for a couple weeks now and im really happy with how its coming along. Ive kinda got my own rhythm down now production wise but im still very naive.
I always hear and see people on this forum posting stuff about "add this to your chain" or "sidechain this to that" etc. and all i know is how to sidechain compression to a kick (or a snare or whatever) for sub bass or to give more of a whooshing bouncy feel to a melody.
Back to the song ive been working on - its all there and its sounding really good and full. However i dont think the sounds are blending very well together, like production wise, it sounds very blocky or chunky and im thinking that sidechaining could probably help with that but i dont know how
I can upload a clip of the song so you guys can hear what i mean and see if anybody can give me any pointers. Im not gonna upload it unless somebody says something because im not sure if anyone would get pissed and direct me to the WIP forum or something.
Aside from asking for advice what all can be done through sidechaining? I wanna learn this stuff for future reference because i know itll make me a better more knowledgeable producer.
