Kick (Layering With Bass)

Post by itsHAZED » Sat Sep 28, 2013 6:05 am

So a good producer friend of mine helped me out greatly with my issue of layering a kick drum over an 808 to get a clean punchy 808 bass. I cut all the frequencies below 70hz on my kick drum, and boost it around 100-120hz, and I cut all the frequencies above 80hz on my 808 bass.

I am just wondering, when I am NOT layering my kick with an 808 underneath. Do I need to cut the frequencies below 70hz still? Or do I leave it.

If it sounds good, do it. This depends a lot on other instruments in the mix. In Drum and Bass, for example, kicks are often highpassed to make room for the deep subs. On House, it works the other way around, with bass being a bit higher and kicks occupying the lowest region. The main thing is to not have sounds conflict each other, or else the mix can get muddy.

You can highpass it so it won't interfere with the sub, or if you like, you can sidechain the sub to the kick

You don't have to do anything. If you know what do you want to achieve, just play around until u get that.
Depth is a delusion, the deeper you look the less you see.

The reason why you are cutting under 70Hz in the first place is to make room for the sub in the 808.

If you have another sub heavy part in there instead of the 808 then may be better to keep that 70Hz cut in. If not and the kick is the lowest thing in your mix (frequency wise) then try taking the cut off and you may get a better result as that area will have something to fill it then.
