What is common sense?

People often bang on about 'common sense' as if it's this easy thought process hat all humans share and everyone should think the same thing yet people think very differently so how is it supposed to work?
A lot of the time people just seem to use it for justifying their own opinion...

I think it boils down to this at a simple level:
- Don't be inconsiderate to fuckers
- Don't mug yourself off

It's value has been questioned for some time. Ask Tom Paine.
As it is it's usually a short cut for people not thinking about stuff particularly well.

To me the word 'common' means something shared, but the only thing shared by most people is their lack of sense.

I guess it's supposed to be a sort of median position of society... in practise it's an entirely useless concept.
I like the rapper, though.

Have you ever told someone to look on the left side, and they start looking on the right side? That person has no common sense.

Common sense is a restriction.... but a useful one.
Social etiquette is really what i don't understand.

Common sense = Not doing things that are blindingly obviously bad for oneself or others
Common sense = Thinking a little bit before doing something

What if that's the point of doing it?
Common sense = Thinking a little bit before doing something
So I should stop to think to jump out of a way of a car? You kind of skewered yourself across those two statements, one can't always be done without the other.

Common sense might also be to check anyway. Why should I not ask DSF?

Then I would say that said person lacks common sense and shouldn't bloody complain/moan it they get maimed or hurt otherwise. They should also be properly dealt with if they actually hurt other people in the process.
Purposely doing something regardless of what the effects are takes it beyond the realm of common sense. Common sense would tell you that such an act will result in harm. Choosing then to do it regardless is premeditation.

Common sense would be LOOKING before you stepped on to the road and into the path of the car. Lack of common sense would be walking on to the road WITHOUT first checking there weren't cars coming along to mow you down. Not sure how I skewered myself.

Yeah but if you stop to think about jumping out of the way of a car, you'll get hit. It's one of your rules or the other in that case. That is, if the car comes out of nowhere and you can't avoid it (even if you didn't do anything wrong except leave the house that day)

I would have said that its having a basic, subconcious grasp of risk assesment. Most people dont need to think about looking when crossing the road, they know there is an inherent risk in doing it everytime so they allways look for example.

Common sense isn't just referenced with regard to getting out of the way of oncoming cars, people are way more likely to consider that instinctive rather than rational in any case.
Common sense seems generally to refer to stuff that we can take at face value without considering it, the idea that immigration leads to fewer jobs for the indigenous population or that that harsh sentences deter crime would be ideas that appear both to be common sensical and largely bollocks.
It's a shortcut based on the idea that there's wisdom in crowds and we don't need to consider the stuff that people have considered before us.
