Hello guys)I think this will be a really useful guide of how to create punchy snares for drum and bass and dubstep music. (Sry for bad english
Project file (Ableton live 9 +(waves audio track+Kramer tape+sausage fattaner(not neccecary)) http://www.mediafire.com/download/lzyvz ... roject.zip
Tips:
1 Your snare should have 3 layers: Attack (Red), 170-270 hz Punch(Yellow) And a white noise kinda layer(blue). http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/18/dfqo.png/
2 Use fades to create smooth transitions between these layers (one of the most underrated things in ableton)
Before: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/30/o1di.png
After: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/850/txo2.png
Practical example contains in the project file
3 Use audio track timing to avoid phase cancellation problems (always +-3 ms).
So if after adding second layer you cant hear punch from the first, just try to find best timing, not EQing. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/837/8wof.png/

Super important points, essential even, and I almost never hear people mention them. Nice job
Depends on situation, but i think-this is the best way to add attack without using a lot of compression)
Also i made a nice snare 3 layers (attack, low, white noise) of that was crossfaded.
Try on practice) find what works best for you)
this is really fucking cool how you made it, and i've seen that technique used before, can't remember what tutorial or who it was. but i hate to say it, this is one way around the tree, you are going left around the tree, i am going right (by compression/eq/sample choice/effects processing) both of us end up on the other side of the tree. so while this tutorial is awesome and good to know.... eh. it's just another way of going about it. if you had a pro-mixed and mastered CD with a song with a 16 bar straight drum loop, and you cut a snare out, you could essentially not have to process it. again, that is going left around the tree.
point being doesn't matter if you go right or left. but it's good to know there are choices.
Yep, pitch is wrong a lil, sorry) But sounds pretty much similar anyway)
To the people who expected tutorial, this is a demonstration of alp mostly. You can download it and check some technics that i use and apply them to your production.
