Kick Drum Layering (Over 808)

Post by itsHAZED » Mon Oct 14, 2013 5:29 am

Hey guys.

So I make an '808' type bass in Massive, EQ - cut everything below 30Hz, and everything above 80Hz. Use Maxxbass to give it some harmonics.

Then I layer a kickdrum sample (707 kick), with about 700ms decay time (in Ableton's Impulse), EQ - cut everything below 70Hz, and boost it really hard with a pretty low Q at around 100Hz. (I slightly compress it using 'The Glue' compressor.

In my mix, the kick is usually around -8dB and the bass around -11dB.

This is what I come up with: https://soundcloud.com/itshazed/hollowwords

How can I get my kicks to hit way harder such as these tracks:
https://soundcloud.com/simplify/kair...get-down-jesse
https://soundcloud.com/officialsnails/hypnosis
https://soundcloud.com/partyfavormus...em-lost-boys-x

The transients on their kicks seem super clicky and they hit really hard, and the bass seems to fit underneath them perfectly. I am always afraid to use transient designers on the kicks, and I just can't get them to hit in the right frequency!

Any suggestions?

Maybe 2-5ms (manually trim) long hihat sample (maybe white noise, cowbell, anything with high frequency content) just before or on top of existing kick click part. Might be better just before the existing click this way you wont create a massive transient peak in your waveform and lose headroom.
