Ableton, producing on 2 different laptops

Post by outdropt » Wed Nov 06, 2013 8:15 pm

It's been a while DSF. I've been working hard on some songs and what not.

I have Ableton 9 installed on my work laptop and personal PC.

Originally i only made tracks at home but with my recent schedule change i have a lot of free time at work.

Does anyone else produce on two different laptops?

The VST's weren't too bad.

The biggest bitch was keeping the folder structure when transferring my sample packs. If you try to load a project made on another PC most of the samples are not actually loaded into the project, Ableton just points to the location that the file is located at and its loaded when the project opens. If you change a folder name or file location the sample will go off line the next time you load the project.

You can always Manage the set in file manager and save external files into the project which is my current way of transferring projects from PC to PC.

Anyone have advise on the best practice or an easier way to keep everything synced?

I do most of my producing on my laptop, and just move over to desktop for finishing things up.

Best way I found is to just keep identical sample library's on both machines (I almost spelled that maschine :corntard: ). That way you can open whatever and have everything there without having to transfer files on a project by project basis. Doing that actually made me really, really cut back on my sample library. Must be less than 10 gigs now.

I'd say the only problem is to make sure you keep all you're plugins updated on both computers so you don't run into any issues.
This space for rent.

Use Dropbox or Copy. Collect all and save and work in the shared folder. Bam, your project works everywhere. You've got to have the same VSTs or freeze the tracks though.
