How do i make this sound? I hear it a lot in house music

Post by Dizzo » Fri Nov 15, 2013 10:20 pm

I here this sound in house music a lot. Heres two examples but im sure that there are many more than just these two.

It comes in at 1:50 in this song
Soundcloud

And it comes in at 1:00 here
Soundcloud

It sounds like a detuned saw to me but i dont know how to get that really gritty sound that a bunch of people use. Every time i look up a tutorial on youtube its always a lot higher pitched and sounds more smooth which isnt what im looking for. Can anybody help me out here or point me to a video or something?

Also i only have sylenth and massive but ive heard hardwell uses nexus a lot - is this a nexus preset? Or will i be able to effectively make this with what ive got?

I guess you are just missing distortion/drive?
First sound is pretty massive'y

try 2 saws at -12
the other at 0
Bit Crush + Clip
Tube + Dimension Expander (or reverb/mono chorus)
3 voices
Daft or daft + another filter (like scream/lp)
Eq to taste

then play around with pitch, filter and drive and phase modulation till you get whatever you are looking for
you could also put an env on the amp of the higher octave saw

hope that helps:P

Wow that daft filter really makes a huge difference. Ill keep messing around with it until i get it to sound really nice. So far it just sounds poor to me but im sure i just gotta get it down and mix it well

Try EQ'ing the upper mids out of the sounds too - gives you the fat low end and the crisp top end but removes the mud from the sound.

Would give you the project but I don't have it anymore. Basically what I did was use a 3xOsc Saw and then use ohmicide and bitcrush (no downsampling, just drive) and then some eq to cut out the annoying frequencies. To get that crunchy sound you want to Multiband distort and focus on the lower mids.

Okay so i used ohmicide and bitcrusher and now it just sounding way too distorted. I dont really know how to use ohmicide so im kinda just playing around with the settings but im not getting anything other than a really bad guitar amp like sound. Could anybody give me any ohmicide tips for this?

Also ill give you guys a tun down of what i have so far -
Massive:
Osc 1 and 2 - Saw1 at -12
Osc 3 - Saw1 at 0
Intensity and Amp are all the way up for all Oscillators
Filter 1 - Daft with resonance at a little under halfway and cutoff a little over 3 o clock
FX 1 - Chorus Mono (Just played around until it sounded nice)
FX 2 - Dimension Expander with dry/wet right at 9 oclock and size at 2 oclock
Insert 1 and 2 - Bitcrush and Parabolic Shaper (Personally i cant even really tell what theyre doing but i just took your guys' word for it)
3 voices

Basically i just followed RARRR's instructions and it sounding alright but definitely not as good as i would like it too. Like i said, when everything is done it just sounds way too distorted :?

Ha this is hilarious... I actually had your same question about a week ago, but fiddled with it myself and came up with almost literally these exact settings all the way down to 3 voices :o

I think you really only need 1 osc for the main sound though, I added a second osc at 0 (i think I used deep throat) and ran it through a different filter than the first osc to give it a nice vowley sound. I also added some distortion units for post-processer and smashed it to bits with a sausagefattener at the end because that's what all the kids are doing these days :corndance:
