The deaf community is angry over what they say was a fake sign language interpreter used at former president Nelson Mandela's memorial, according to reports.

According to various online reports, the sign language interpreter used at the memorial at FNB Stadium in Soweto on Tuesday may have been unqualified.

Braam Jordaan, a deaf South African citizen and board member of the World Federation of the Deaf Youth Section (WDF), was quoted as saying : “The structure of his hand, facial expressions and the body movements did not follow what the speaker was saying.

And now the Interpreter is claiming it was a 'schizophrenic episode'.

Leslie Grange, 32, has been a sign language interpreter for seven years. In a statement today she cited ‘personal difficulties – particularly a crushing professional boredom’ as to why, over the past six months, she had started deviating from what was actually being reported, giving deaf viewers an often ‘wildly different version of events’.

“Questions started to be raised around the time of the Japanese earthquake when several viewers emailed us to complain about our reports of radioactive zombies sighted near the nuclear reactor. We dismissed them as some sort of organised hoax.”

“However, when there were similar numbers getting in touch to ask if Rebekah Brooks was really in trouble for raping a monkey, and why the BBC was claiming that, as a special summer treat, the Prime Minister had told the nation’s teenagers they didn’t have to pay for anything any more, we realised something was wrong.”

“I would like to apologise to everyone in the deaf community,” Grange told reporters today, “though when I had Cameron tell Obama “your statesmen-like profile leaves my willy plump” – well, frankly I don’t think that is so very far from the truth.”

The sign language interpreter accused of using fake hand signals at Nelson Mandela's memorial has said he suffered a schizophrenic episode.

Thamsanqa Jantjie, 34, told the BBC's Ros Atkins that he saw angels coming into the stadium.

Deaf viewers at the memorial service said he was "signing rubbish", and complained he was a fraud.

Mr Jantjie said he was aware that he might not have been signing exactly what people were saying.

South Africa minister says interpreting firm has 'vanished'

A South African government minister has said the company that supplied the sign language interpreter for the Nelson Mandela memorial ceremony has "vanished".

The interpreter who is accused of using fake hand signals at the service on Tuesday has said he suffered a schizophrenic episode.

Deaf organisations in South Africa said he had been signing "gibberish" and complained that he was a fraud.

Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, Deputy Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, said that the interpreting company had been providing "sub-standard services" for some time.

It's just that he has now caused an international embarrassment for the ANC.
