LYNX - the most exciting producer in dnb atm imo

Post by moujah » Sun Sep 16, 2007 1:01 am

After FANU said on his blog he quits producing dnb I thought it's almost like there's no reason to check new shit in dnb anymore. he was (for me) something like a last candle of invention burning in the scene..

however in the summer I heard Marky (just cause he is a badman DJ) and Shy FX (just cause he's a legend and he performed with MC Tali) play a few tracks which really were something new. one of them was Disco Dodo by LYNX ( http://www.myspace.com/stevelynx ).

I fell in love with the beat first time I heard it! such a fresh switch against the formulaic drums programming that's been going on since jungle was made "more danceable" and changed the name for drum'n'bass.

luckily there is Fabio, Marky, Shy and other big names who are supporting this guy and his beats experiments. hopefully it will calm down that wave of jump-up and neurofunk nonsense of past few years. Bring the minimalism back, please!

anyway, check Lynx's mix

I probably wouldn't be digging Disco Dodo if I haven't heard it loud in good mixes by Marky and Shy FX. It was really refreshing in their sets and I believe production-wise it's a refreshing piece of music that might stir the drum'n'bass scene a lot. It's just totally different from everything else because of that twisted beat and I am totally hooked on such experimenting. Think dnb needs such tunes very badly.

Enjoy the mix ;)

Fanu left dnb? One of the few artists left that still managed to bring something fresh to the genre.

Global Enemies and Disco Dodo are both good stuff, and so refreshing after the avalanche of midrange hell dnb is plagued with these days.

from his blog:

----------------------------------------
July 15th

I'VE CHANGED!

Well, most of you know Fanu as a drum and bass head.
That's what I've been for such a long time.
Not to say I've been a drum-and-bass-only head, never, no...

But dnb has really lost its importance in my life.
And, btw, before I go any further, I'll say this is not another of the numerous "oh I'm quitting dnb" posts you can find on the net.
I'll be realistic.

Well, this really isn't a recent thing.
I listen to zero drum and bass these days.
I'm not interested anymore.
The only times I rock some is when I play gigs, and those are the moments when I DO love it.
But that's all. I don't even listen to mixes anymore, check out clips, ask people for tunes, go check records in a shop etc.
I never go to dnb parties unless I play.
Has to do with many things: mainly dnb becoming quite soulless wank in general and the sound they consider suitable for parties getting so boring that I can't relate to it in the least. I suppose I've got a bit tired of constantly being/digging in the marginal (no, this really ain't gotta do with not getting money and/or fame, trust me).

These days, I listen to The Ramones, Pantera, Pearl Jam, Black Label Society and stuff like that and wish I had money to buy a drumkit and play drums to rock tunes.

We'll see where this thing goes!

I dont worry about him making good music outside dnb though :) I actually agree with everything he says and understand why he was pissed with the scene. He deserved to get as much support by the big names as Lynx is getting right now I think. But maybe Fanu's music was just too deep to break into the core of dnb scene. but he doesn't really need the scene with his talent. there is no scene supporting Aphex Twin either and yet he is BIG :)

How are the Ramones any less 'soulless wank' than party dnb? They're pretty much the rock equivalent of jump up.

Not saying I don't like them (although I don't really)

Uno and Carnavale are totally sick, I agree.

The SoulR camp for me is the last beacon. And Headz.

Even Alex Perez etc just rip off other people's sounds - Calibre, cough, and, erm, Commix, cough...

Lynx is a badman though, no doubt.

hadnt heard this guy before i read this, fair do's its some nice production he's got going on but to be honest its a bit mellow for my liking - I love drum n bass for its energy and its rowdiness, you liquid heads can give me all that "clownstep" patter all you like and at the end of the day with some of clipz's recent stuff I'd completely agree with you, but i see no
point in listening to drum and bass music if your not going to listen to the rowdy lets smoke crack and shoot people style of it.

Marcus fucking intalex....zzzzZZZZ
Just another number in the chuckle demographic
