Sample Organization Program(?)

Post by JoeOsoDopke » Tue Dec 17, 2013 7:05 pm

Hi everyone, it's been a while since I posted on here, but I really think this is something that should be brought up; disclaimer: I'm posting this on the Gearslutz & IDM forum.

Now I know the topic of organizing one's sample collection has been brought up (and for good reason, considering an organized sample library facilitates better, more efficient workflow), and in every post I've seen so far, this organization has been achieved using various folders, subfolders sub-sub folders, etc. However, I feel while this may be the best current way as to organize samples, it certainly isn't the best way that could (or already does) possibly exist. That being said, I would pay a fair amount of money for a program which would assist in organizing my sample library, and if it doesn't exist, I have ideas for which to include in it; please, if anyone knows of a decent program like the one I'm about to describe, inform us all.

Instead of just organization via folder being employed, using a method of tagging samples with certain characteristics (IE NI Massive, FM8 or Absynth's browser tab) so that one sample can be under multiple, more specific classification standards, rather than being located solely in a single perceived space. In these classification standards, various pre-made tags would come with the program (such as Kick Drum, Piano, etc) along with the option for users to create their own tags so workflow could be more personalized. I, for one, would include tags such as the pitch &\or key of the sample (or label of "none" if the sample is without distinguishable pitch or key), the date the sample was created (so that if say, I was in the midst of a sample & sound design making session, I could see what else I made that day in the similar vein), where the sample came from (if say one purchased a sample pack), whether the sample is a loop or one shot (or any grey area in between those two), along with various, more individual tags on my own perception of the sound (such as distorted, dark, warm, etc.)
Amongst these tags, I would add the option to "favorite" sounds, so that if I find a particular sample I like, I can simply favorite it &, along with using other tags in tandem, be able to recall samples this way (I think this would particularly useful if I am inspecting a sample pack's samples & find one I like, I can make a note of it without having to move it from its OG sample pack in the first place.)

Along with this, I think basic browser functionality should be included in this program (similar to if one had the "songs" tab clicked in iTunes). However, unlike iTunes, I think the method of auditioning samples should be like that of Ableton Live, which should include the "raw" button (if you're not an Ableton user, the "raw" button toggles whether or not the sample is looped during playback)

Finally, and this is 100% wishful thinking if anything, I would love this program to integrate in DAW's without having to have it open as a separate program, (although, I would like it to act as a standalone program when I need it to be so) and this means when I'm in a sample making session, I can simply drag the audio file in the sample organizing program when I make it (and in my case, tag it after.)

As you can see, this post is less of saying "does anyone know about something like this" and more of a "wouldn't it be cool if..."
If there are any programers, designers, companies, etc. reading this, you have money to be made!
