Confused over tempo.
Hi guys.
I have a Trap-style track that I've been working on a for a few days now. I had originally produced it at 140BPM since I'm typically used to doing that for Dubstep and a lot of Trap is being mixed with Dubstep.
About a half an hour ago I decided to play with the tempo and crank it up to 160BPM from the original 140BPM, and I'm pretty happy with it. The thing is, I don't really have much experience in mixing so I don't know if this will make my track less easily mixed than if I had left it at 140BPM.
I've read that Trap is typically anywhere from 70/140 to 85/170 and I've heard it mixed in with Dubstep before.
Heres two examples of the same track at both 140BPM and 160BPM.

Re: Confused over tempo.
Not gonna lie the 160 version sounds sick as fuck.
Also, I dont really understand your question here.
I've been mixing for 4 years. Producing for 1. Full musician for 9 years.

Re: Confused over tempo.
I don't really know how to word it properly I guess since I don't really have much experience mixing.
Basically I want my track to be able to be mixed by a DJ (if they choose it) and used in a bass music set so like... Trap, Dubstep, Electro. Like something you would hear Excision or Datsik play.
Is having my track at 160BPM going to cut me off from having a track like this, in a set like that?
Also thanks for the compliment

Re: Confused over tempo.
dat 160bpm version tho
Having it at 160 does make it more difficult to mix with a 140 track, yes, but the increase in difficulty is negligible. If the DJ in question has any sort of skill in their craft, they'd be able to mix it just fine. That said, I'm not a great DJ and would probably screw something up ẅ

They might choose to not play it in a 140 set, or not consider it.

Re: Confused over tempo.
I like that 160 version... and as much as I like playing shit slower than normal... I wouldn't go any slower than this.
I really like it and it works nice.
So yeah... just do what you do and stop begging for people's permission. Have a vision and go with it without begging for forgiveness. If you can slide this to me within the next 10 hours, I might just put it up for my best "Unsigned Track" of 2013 with some other dope tracks on my Sub.FM show.

btw - BPM-regulated DJs are suckas. Anyone who has game can play dope tracks no matter what the BPM.

Re: Confused over tempo.
That said - the "Damn Son..." vocal sample is a bit annoying.....
twice per 1:21 is OK as it is assumed it is watermarking....
...but for a full track - no way a DJ wants to hear that every 45 seconds... unless you want you track re-edited.

Re: Confused over tempo.
Well it will be pretty hard to mix a 160 track with a 'bass music' set as the software/cdj probably wont even be able to pitch it down that much, and it will probably sound horrbly shit and slow if it is pitched down that much. but then whats wrong with it being mixed in with a juke/dnb/hip hop/trap set?

Re: Confused over tempo.
That's what makes it trap though. It needs to be made without any thought put into it.. andMad EP wrote:That said - the "Damn Son..." vocal sample is a bit annoying.....![]()
if that's not the case it should at least be amazingly bad production with cheesy vocal chops.

Re: Confused over tempo.
Even if it was vinyl on technics,
If someone is playing 140, they will pitch up to at least +2/3 (I tend to go m ore +4/5) just for resolution of the pitch purposes.
So if they'd play your 160 tune, they'd only have to pitch it down -6 to get it in time (with some adjustments on the other deck)/
CDs/software it'll be a piece of piss to get it in time, if you mix em both about 145-150 so they both won't sound shitty.
If a DJ wants to play your track, he will find a way to play it - don't worry about BPMs, theres been plenty of hiphop instruments that I have just bought in on its own as a "breather" in my sets.
P.S - I quite like the tune, 320 me?

Re: Confused over tempo.
Pretty stoked you guys actually like the tune. I don't think I've made anything yet that anyone likes haha. Ive only been doing this for 9 months.
Is there other Dubstep-ish music being produced at 160+ BPM? The tempo of this tune feels a lot more like Excisions kind of shit which is the type of Dubstep I've been trying to make. That Brostep kinda shit. It just feels way more danceable at 160, I don't think I could ever produce at 140 again.

Re: Confused over tempo.
so heres one i like to play at 140, even though its drumstep (dubstep music ish at a higher tempo). i htink its better at 140 though.
I first heard this track at 140 when pendelum dropped it in their essential mix.... first time i heard it speed up at normal tempo, i was like WTF lol i always kick it down to 140 when it made it into a set.
Found 140bpm clip

Re: Confused over tempo.
Most dubstep/bass DJ's jumped the 140 ship years ago. It's not uncommon these days for a good DJ to go from mid-120's to 180 within a 2 hour set, all while keeping the transitions smooth. Hunt around on Beatport for a while and you'll find plenty of trap songs at 160.
