Decent Stereo-Field Expander Plug-in?

Post by Dub_Fiend » Thu Jan 02, 2014 11:49 am

Anyone got any suggestions for a good expander VST? I've used the Dimension Expander in Massive a bit but I have a feeling that there are probably better 3rd Party plug-ins hanging around somewhere...

Thought before I trawl through KVR's plug-in database I'd hit you lot up to see what you thought :)

X-Fer Records have a clone, if that helps.

Where'd you get your idea of what an expander is?

Watch out what words you are using, expander is actually the inverse of a compressor, which expands the dynamic range of the signal.

Hahahaha, I should have remembered that having done a Music Technology degree...

I meant a stereo-field expander, something like the dimension expander in Massive but with more control over the parameters :)

Are you the one telling people stuff beyond their knowledge? Some dude was looking to compress his synths and seemed to not have an idea of what a compressor is.

I was referring to this: http://www.dubstepforum.com/forum/viewt ... 3&t=281083

The alternating synth in the second section sounds like it might be made a bit more lively with dynamic expansion. I saw the same user asking in this forum for something I didn't intend.

My point has been made and I shall no longer participate because I have nothing to add. :4:

Hahahaha, fair do! Again, should've known what you're talking about. My bad.

Just to say btw this thread is still about a stereo-field expander, not a dynamic range expander. Maybe I should just be asking for a decent chorus VST?

Or call this thread on the car crash it is and be done with it?

Not knowing the term for a name is not the same as not knowing what it does and how you're supposed to use it.

Xfer one is in here, it's pretty good: http://xferrecords.com/freeware/
Besides that, Maximus has a "stereo separation" knob which doesn't actually add side content, but it enhances the stereo stuff that's already there. Not sure how it works, but sometimes it can sound really cool.
I'd like to get "DUY wide" as well, from what i've heard on tutorials and such, it sounds really good.

You can always just make a custom haas effect by delaying the right channel from the left a few ms (try 10). It creates some pretty damn annoying phase issues though, be careful with that.

I actually know a technique for making stuff nicely stereo wide, even if the signal is mono in the first place, and leaving NO phase issues. You want to know it? :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Maybe all of you know it anyway but yeah.

I think you're after something like Fruity Stereo Shaper, quite useful for widening pads etc
