I'm using Reaper and it's pretty easy to pull samples off audio but I always end up getting a slightly messy result. Probably a lot to do with the audio, but I have 200 CDs that I can filter through so I just need to practise.

Anyone know any good videos, websites, or any tips etc for getting decent samples off audio?

Use a good audio editor. Edison from IL is the fastest (of course, IL is psycho for speed) I've found.

I'm willing to race anyone in their editor, open a sample, select in's and outs, find or create a zero cross for start and end, and then bring the sample into playlist/arrange/some other sampler vst.

Learn your audio editor's shortcuts. Shortcuts for zooming and snapping are essential. Forest and tree, forest and tree. Fast, fast, fast.

Got any decent videos of it being used? I need a decent sample mapper for putting them all on one track. I am actually willing to pay, but cost is kind of a deciding factor.

You are a strange one. Did you mention you use reaper? That shouldn't be much of a problem. I can't recall if you can drag and drop audio in reaper... in flstudio, I just grab the audio out of the editor and place it where I want it, in a track or in a vst.

For examples, almost all of the 'songs' in my soundcloud, except jazz on my couch, are made from pieces of samples from external or internal sources. Also, check out in the production subforum for contests, there is a thread for the sample contest, dl that sample pack, all of that was sampled through Edison. About 300mb of samples.

I mean all on one track for drums, generally. Ableton's drum rack is actually sick for letting you add effects to individual samples and on the whole group. Will check out the SC cheers

have you considered spending 10 minutes with your DAW?

Slice up the audio non-destructively in Reaper, render the clips as new takes, open them in explorer (or media browser possibly, haven't fucked with that much), drag em over into a sampler like Geist, set up the multi-outs to different tracks for individual effects, enclose everything in a folder track for buss effects. You could also do your editing within Geist if you didn't wanna have to re-render each clip as a new take.

Cutting is an art form. Those people who use MPCs are geniuses when learning how to cut.

Just grab an Amen and rearrange it, cut it up, process it, pitch it, stretch it. You'll 'get' it after a while.

While i'm not the best at cutting, I can get 5-6 different rhythms out of a 4 second conga line without it sounding iffy but its taken me literally years to learn how to do this without it taking a whole day of fucking around. Its all about the recording too, learning how to correct the imperfections like reverb tails and shit is the hardest thing, sometimes a sample is just not good to use, even if it sounds perfect!

In all honesty, I'd love to be able to help you out, but I don't really know what you're trying to do. Context is very important. Are you sampling drum beats, drum hits, musical phrases, musical notes, foley, sampling from vinyl, from you tube, from your synths. There is a lot to it, and it is all a bit unique. If you provide context with your questions, people here can better direct you to techniques and resources that will help you. But when you ask nebulous odd questions like how to sample and put samples on one track, without much more info... there isn't much that we can do.

Apparently that's how King Tubby used to dub tracks before he started recording songs specifically for dubbing. Isolated each element by EQ etc. That would make sense since I tried cutting a drum solo with some crash left over in bits, thought of it but haven't had the chance to try it yet (bloody working until 9 at night most days)

@nowasj: I'm just looking for basic tips on anything, but if you want me to be more specific I'm particularly keen on sampling drums because I like the vibe of live percussion. I just didn't find a thread on how to actually sample existing recordings, though there are lots and lots of threads asking for pre-made one shots and music to sample from...

What are you sampling from? What technology are you using?

I'm sampling from CDs, a lot of it's '60s pop and '70s rock. Got one Scientist dub CD that has a few hits I want off.

Just got Reaper to sample with, Audacity might be a good choice to start with as an add-on
